So I'll ask a stupid question.....how do you check the gear mesh without being able to turn the gears. Obviously I've never installed gears before.

Having done this recently I can't imagine laying on my back and doing this with the case installed. Pull the case and do this on the bench.
My take is that they are popular with the classic jeep crowd, but not sought after like the 8s.
I rebuilt my T18 in my parents garage in my early 20s with zero transmission experience and basic hand tools. Still going strong after 25 years....
