Might be true - never tried it...;) Seems like a good posi wouldn't allow the "slip" to happen, but not sure.
On the rear diff, open = turn one wheel and the other wheel goes the opposite way. Limited slip or locked = turn one wheel and the other wheel...
Good chance his "no modification" thing is wrong anyway. Center holes are probably too small.
My first thought was someone didn't want birds on them. You might be right. Esp. considering the small boat.
Using the skid plate makes the installation much easier, IMHO.
Support rods would be easy enough to bend/fab up to get around that pump.

Without knowing how they were setup, it's impossible to say.
