source for replacement windshield

My 56 cj-5 is painted and ready for assembly. I dug out the windshield and found a huge chip in it. Can anyone recomend a source for a new windshield for a 56 cj-5? It is one piece and flat. Everywhere I look shows 68 -75. From reading the search engine, it looks like the glass is not the same from 56-67 as 68-75.

 

Local automotive glass installer would be my recommendation. Or take the old one to a glass shop and have them cut a piece to fit out of safety glass.

 

local would be easiest, and likely cheapest, just take the frame and it should quickest, make sure you get a corner with the safety rating etch.
it doesn't matter if it is upside down and backwards but don't leave unless it has the etching. (from experience)

 

I was thinking of doing that as well. Do you think a glass shop could install the glass without scratching up the paint if I took them just the frame?

 

It is easier to install the glass on a jeep than chasing the frame around the table, according to my glass guy. but he did mine loose and didn't wreck the fresh paint. ... I just had one put in including new rubber for my DJ, custom cut as the windshield is a little custom, $162.89 out the door. More than I used to pay but what hasn't gone up.

 

mine is made out of a sheet of Plexiglass.

 

I've taken several freshly painted frames to the local glass shop over the years and they always came back looking great and at a fair price. They cut the glass to match, supplied the new rubber, installed without a scratch.

 

The after market windshield frame I got to replace mine . the old glass would not fit into the new frame . glass shop had to cut a new one . the one they had ordered for the jeep wouldn't fit but they didn't charge for that one . I just took the jeep to them

 

I just had mine replaced when I cracked it while removing a windshield wiper with a screwdriver. :O

Anyway, I shopped around quite a bit, and the price for ordering one was basically exactly the same as getting one installed at a local automotive glass shop. I paid $125 out the door, and didn't have to worry about doing it/screwing it up myself.

 

Thanks for the info, guys. Called around to every autoglass installer in Lancaster County and none of them would touch it , " Sir this car is too old for us". Found an auto restorer who will install ( no parts, just the install) for 200 bucks. Called a local plate glass/plastic/stained glass guy and he said for the laminated glass and the install.....130 bucks. Looks like a winner.
Can't do Plexi or Lexan in Pa. It is not road legal.

 

Sounds like none of those installers will make a dime on tractor cab windows or other heavy equipment glass either.. Their loss...Too Old???Hmm.. How about "don't have the skills to custom cut glass" instead...lol.
