I'm looking for inovative ideas to secure my CJ and its parts from theft. Surely there's some good original ideas out there.

Ya can chain yer big angry, hungry dogs to it.

Or park it in a big puddle, run an electrical cord from the house with the end cut off. Connect one lead to the body or frame and put the other in the water.
Just don't forget to unplug the cord before you go for a ride.

I installed a fuel tank selector switch with an off position under the drivers seat. I turn off the fuel whenever I leave the jeep, it will start and run but won't go far. I also have a marine battery selector switch under the hood, but I don't use that much anymore. I used to have a hood lock but I took it off as it was too much trouble.

As for stuff inside, if I am not willing to loose it I don't take it with me. Needless to say I don't run too many errands with the CJ, unless it's small stuff I can hide in the tool box, out of sight or I am heading straight home. Once I got past the initial anxiety of leaving stuff in a vehicle with out locks, I became much more relaxed and learned to not worry too much.

I know a guy in San Antonio who protects his truck and contents by keeping a live rattlesnake in the cab.

Otherwise, tuffy console, hood lock, hidden battery cut off switch,, fuel line valve, removeable steering wheel.
All of which can be easily defeated by determined theives.

CJ and security are almost mutually exclusive.

My biggest piece of mind came when I stopped worrying about security. There isn't much to take anyway, unless they take the whole thing and it's insured. :)

I have a lock box in back bolted in and a battery switch under the dash with a removable key.

The box is big enough to hold our stuff for day trips and keeps it in the jeep, not bouncing out onto the trail.

I have worried about that for a long time, be I have never had my jeep broken into. My cars have been but not the jeep.
I did have an idiot take a knife and cut a slit in my window to get a chrome fire extinguisher strapped to the roll bar. idiot could have just opened the door to get it..

I too was concerned with the lack of security in my CJ. I built a lockable center console out of a 40MM ammo can. It's pretty simple to build and offers a good sized stout lockable box and a comfortable arm rest. It's bolted to the floor in the back and to the seat frame in the front. Fits like it was custom made. Total cost was about $20. I found mine at a local gun store but you can find them online too.

I have all the stuff mentioned above-fuel shut off, ignition cut off, battery cut off, hood locked down.
However, none of that would stop 2 guys with a tow chain & a pickup truck.

Pete72, those seats look great!! Are they factory seats?

Thanks. Yeah, they're the stock seats that I got reupholstered. I had a local guy copy the stock stitching and we used the cheapest vinyl he had. Amazingly, the original foam was in pretty good shape so he used that too. The guy does a lot of boat seats and said that they are just like a low back captains chair.

I also like the camo box. Now picture this, Use a short chain or cable put the tranny in 1st (If a three speed) then loop this cable/chain around the shifter and lock it in the same lock you use for the ammo box. It is now locked in 1st gear. They may steal it but they are not going any where fast. Like most, I do not take much worth stealing with me. Yet I have never had anything stolen from my Willys, or for that matter from the bed of any of the pick-ups I have owned.

    IHTH. Matt W.

PS. Thread chain/cable thru a rubber or plastic hose first so it will not scratch the paint job.

There's been a few really good ideas so far. I like the ammo box and will go to a gun show tomorrow. A battery disconnect is easy to bypass with jumper cables but a private message suggested hiding it on the battery ground circuit - great idea and easy to hide. There's a keyed marine disconnect available. How about stopping them from dragging it off. A brake pedal lock of some kind?

I like that chain to the shifter idea, effective, cheap, easy....perfect. Better than the Army method of welding an Eye bolt to the floor and chaining the steering wheel to the floor.

nice seats, I keep my jeep so dirty and look like **** no one ever bothered it. They usiually could not see what caolor the paint was and and with all the mud on it, they just kept clear of it. did not need the mess I guess.

Of course that Ammo can Idea is a great one. and if you go to an army surplus store you can find them in almost any size.

Has anyone come up with a way to lock it in 4-Lo? That would surely stop them from dragging it off!
