Probably be cheaper, easier and faster to just buy a CJ-6.

Not much to stretching a CJ-5. Lengthen the frame, and fabricate the panels to lengthen the body.

Didn't stretch mine to CJ-6 length, that would be silly and look homemade (so I've read). Did add five inches of needed leg room in the door area, check out my "Pink Picnic JEEP" build thread for pictures of the frame splice. If I had thought a little harder, would have used two different frames I had on hand and there would be only one splice to weld, not two.

You could always grab a Commando frame and cut some of the rear overhang off.

I would like to be able to just buy a cj6 but in three years of casually looking Ive not seen one for sale in NC SC VA or TN. I live in NC and have never even seen one in person. I also have a good running driving cj5 with good frame and decent body with hard top (hard top stretch will be super easy) and a cj5 tub i could get the formed section of sheet metal i would need. I cant justify selling the one i have (probably at a loss) to buy a jeep that i havent been able to find here. I was hoping i could find some info on problems others ran into or any good ideas to incorparate during the stretch

I do agree that if you have a lot of money into your current Jeep that it's cheaper to stretch it, rather than sell it at a loss, then buy an over priced CJ6 and possibly have to spend money on upgrades again.

    There's a thread here on a CJ3B stretch: http://www.myjeeprocks.com/forums/showthread.php/16200-CJ3b....That-is-what-the-vin-tag-says./page27?highlight=cj3b
I'm sure there's a lot of stretch builds on the net.

I have a crusty old CJ3B tub that I'm going to put on a CJ6 frame next summer. Then swap over all the parts from my current Jeep.

as you explain the situation with lack of viable options thinking stretching the 5 is a good idea.....the 6's have a 20" panel attached right behind the door and in front of the rear wheel.....think it would be a fun project
My son and I are thinking about making a stretched cab Jeep PU when we can find the right 5 donor

You may want to do some searching on craigslist and look outside those areas. I bought 3 of them off craigslist earlier this year. I picked up a 74 in Alabama, a 75 in Cincinatti, OH, and another 75 in Fredricksburg, Va. I got all 3 of them in a little over a month. They are out there but they don't stay for sale very long. I parted out the stuff I didn't need. The extra frame I had went to a guy in Wilmington who was going to stretch a 5 into a 6.

Where in NC are you? If you are close to the beach you can come see what a 6 looks like in person (its still being built).

I dont have the means to get out that far to bring one back. Im up in kannapolis just north of charlotte. we head down that way a couple times a year, maybe can get up with you and check it out.

I had talked to a guy in wilmington earlier this year about a cj6 frame and some other parts, but lost touch with him befor could work out a deal I dont recall him having a body, wonder if it was the same guy

It may have been me. I had the frame advertised a bunch of places but nobody could come get it and I had to get it gone. He came and got it the day I was loading it up to go to the metal recycler. You never know, he may have decided to sell it. He was going to try and get the title fixed and if he did it may have been sold. I never heard back from him but he bought about half of the parts I had for sale at the time so there are definitely a bunch of CJ-6 parts floating around down here.

As for going and getting a CJ (5 or 6) from somewhere out of town, you can pick up a harbor freight tow bar, chains, and magnetic lights for under $100 and re-use them on multiple donor Jeeps. If you don't have a tow vehicle just rent or borrow a full size pickup that has a hitch. If you wait for good deals you can still build one cheap even if you have to go get it.

The hunt for the donor jeeps is a big part of the adventure.
