Timing adjustment

    When adjusting my timing, without light because it broke, to my ear, I rotate the distributor all the way, and is sound better and better all the way up until I hit the plate that doesn't allow me to turn it anymore. Also the oil wick rotates until it hits the enging, at the same time pretty much. I just feel that I should be able to get another degree or two to the timing, but can't. BTW @ 10,000 feet elevation.

    the most you would need would be only 5-10* max advanced over the stock setting.

    I guess the question is whether anyone else has an issue in which they cannot adjust the timing as much as they want.

    Or, are you experiencing the same blockage?

    At my elevation, I have hear of jeeps running as much as 12 btdc. I feel like mine is only at about 5-6(the last time that i had a light).

    or perhaps a vacuum gauge? I don't have either, and to be honest the question was about whether anyone has run into the issue where the timing adjustments are limited by the mechanical ability of the distributor to turn... I actually do have a vacuum gauge i think, but just not the correct tips.

    You can time it with a vac gauge-just turn it till you get best vacuum reading. Be sure to listen for detonation under load. In Colorado (or any other high elevation area) the factory timing specs are meaningless. IIRC mine is about 12 over stock, and I live 3500 ft below you. Also be aware that if you travel to a lower elevation area, you might have to back it off a little.

    Which distro too - if its a V6 and has HEI, yes, there is a limit on alot of them before you have to pull it and move a tooth. Also, if its a V6 225 OF you can not move 1 post on timing (it's the whole even - odd thing).

    That plate under the distributer can be installed upside down very easily.
    And that changes the adjustment limits also.

    I dont know anything about MSD ignitions myself but on the other related post a forum member thought that maybe the MSD unit had a rev limiter function.

    Well, I watched walcks video, and it turns out that my tdc in 11 oclock, and my timing is okay until I rotate my distributor to the point that the oil spigot hits the block. I actually pulled the spigot off, and was able to rotated the distributor freely with it hitting anything and it would rotate past good timing to stall. I was able to rotate back and forth until I timed to the best of my ear. This isn't exact, but I feel that there isn't any more rotation to give it now, and it isn't off by much if at all.
