I am in the process of converting my '67 CJ5 over to power steering and want to know if anyone has any experience in using the bolt-in bracket from a Jeepster that holds the steering gear box. I saw one listed and am thinking about buying it, but it is a 3 bolt unit, not a 4 bolt. However, I don't plan on doing any rock crawling with my Jeep, I just want power steering. Is this something that can be used on my Jeep? Any advise would be appreciated.

    hmm you've got electricity....
the 3 bolt bracket should work just fine
box the frame solidly, mount the box and be happy
    should give no troubles

This is a common conversion and is sought after for people wanting a fairly simple saginaw conversion. I flog the snot out of my '59 '5 with a 3 bolt box (using a different mount) and have had no issues. I wouldn't think the Jeepster mount would be a problem.

I am going to add pictures of this mount I want to buy. It mounts inside the frame rail and the ad says the inside dimension of the frame rail needs to be 3", mine is 2 7/8". I am just curious if someone has used this and has input or has heard of someone using this. Apparently it is a mount for a 72-75 CJ5. IDK. Any advise would be good.
    Thanks, Brad[IMG][/IMG][IMG][/IMG]

I have the same mount that I'm planning to use for my steering conversion. I haven't installed it yet, but I did grind it down to fit inside my frame rail with no trouble (used a regular bench grinder).

That is the same mount I put on my 67 cj5. I removed the rear rivet in the front spring mount and put a long bolt in to secure the front of the steering box mount. I drilled a hole thru the top and bottom of the frame and installed a long bolt to secure the rear part of the mount.

Lamar, do you have any pictures of your installation? What did your gearbox come out of?
    Thanks!

I do not have any pictures. I did the conversion about ten years ago before I even had a computer. I used the power steering box from a 1971 jeepster.

X2 What these guys said about grinding the mount and knocking out the rivet and using a bolt instead. The PO of my '69 put in the same mount. I have been given the advice to add a steering box brace to the opposite side framerail to reinforce the mount, help prevent overstressing and breaking the cast mount. I plan to fab one up, can't seem to find much aftermarket sources for the early CJs anymore.

My book says the 998238 is not a Jeepster part. Instead it's (as you mentioned) the steering gear bracket for an intermediate Jeep. The Jeepster part is different, and I would guess it is very scarce today. The Jeepster had Saginaw steering for only one year as I recall (1971) and thus the original pool of parts will be very limited. Now it's 40 years later ...

Being a fairly heavy cast part, I expect making it fit your frame will not be easy. Welding to cast iron (if needed) is not easy. A bracket made from heavy steel plate would be easier to modify and weldable.

Both Mike (member McRuff) and Advance Adapters have a weld-on bracket that would be a better option than this bracket, IMO. (I thought that Mike was selling his bracket - maybe he's just providing the drawing. You could send him a PM and ask). You could also try to adapt the stamped bracket from from a '76 or later CJ, which are fairly plentiful. There are repops of the factory bracket, or HD replacements like this from MORE http://www.mountainoffroad.com/_e/J...g_Box_Mount_H_D_76_86_Jeep_CJ_5_CJ_7_CJ_8.htm

For reference here is a photo of a 71 Commando saginaw mount.

I does not sit in the frame and has the 4 mounting holes.

The first mount pictured is definitely an intermediate CJ mount. Either will work well for a saginaw conversion, but the CJ mount requires a lot less fabbing and no boxing of the frame. ;)
