When I turn the ignition key one click are both the oil and AMP light suppose to come on? I recently changed the right directional bulb in the dash and had to do the water pump on the 258.

Since then the amp light has glowed dimly and when I turn the key one click it does not light up. I'm not sure if I have an issue with the Alt. (seeing as I had to pull the mounting bracket to get the water pump out and could have wire issues) or a connection behind the dash (from trying to get my hand up behind it and moving wires/connections).

Yes they are supposed to come on. Does the oil light come on still? If not I'd suspect the problem is at the dash, like a bad connection at the pin on the plug or the pin is loose on the circuit board. If the oil light comes on I' check the wiring at the alt, either loose or bad connection. You still running the original Motorcraft alt or is it a Delco?

Thanks for the reply. It was a lucky find.

As I pulled into the driveway tonight (amp still glowing faintly) the light started to flicker brightly. Checked the wires under the hood and found a broken one at the ALT.
Back of the alt has an L shaped black plug with two black (one with a yellow tracer) wires and one of them was broken.

soldered in a new wire and all is well.
