Help!! with V6 conversion

    I'm knee deep into a V6 conversion and I am stumped. Trying to get everything lined up before I weld my motor mounts in. When I center the outside mounting holes for the cross member to the frame the engine sits crooked. I can't move the engine any farther to the left because it will hit the steering shaft. Any advise out there?

    What do you mean crooked? Take some pics if possible, or give us some measurements. The motor does sit to the driver side in the frame if that helps.

    I guess I dont follow...what do you mean by center the outside mounting holes for the crossmember? You mean the rear crossmember that supports the tcase?

    I am guessing - are you talking about mounting holes for cross member to frame rails - do you have the right transmission mount - some have plate that moves transmission mount - off set - T14 maybe

    My eng was doing same thing till I went with different motor mounts , the new mounts helped bring eng over further left and also helped with setting front and rear eng angles [​IMG]

    Please click on the link below for pictures. I guess maybe I should give more info: Im replacing the F4 with a buick V6, sm420 transmission, novak adaptor, D18 xfer case. The crossmember now bolts to the adaptor. When I line up the ends of the crossmember with the frame the engine sits crooked. If I place a straight edge across the front pulley and take a measurement to the front frame crossmember the drivers side measures 4 3/8 and the pass side measures 5 1/8. I can't move the front of the engine in the right direction (towards the drivers side) because it will hit the steering shaft. I think you may be able to see what i mean if you look at the picture.     Here's how I did mine...your frame engine mounts are going to dictate where the engine sits side to side

    Bolt the engine,trans and transfer case together and bolt the engine to the mounts first

    Level it at the carb base or another consistent spot

    Then move backwards

    Ya - toss out any prepositon ideas you have with the fitment. As stated, you need to put it all together and fit from there. I did the same thing with mine http://warloch.com/Winter%2006%2007%20Work.htm but with an SM465. I hung it from the hoist at the motor with a tranny jack on the tcase. Used some small turn buckles to tack to the frame at cross members so I could tweek it if needed while I positioned everything. The motor should have @ 4* back slant, tuck the tranny,tcase as tight as you can, fab mounts... all the while keeping in mind where everything has to line up for steering, drivelines, radiators, shifters, clearing sheet metal, exhaust, and so on.

    Where are you in CO? I might be able to give you some first hand points if we are close enough.

    IMHO, wrong exhaust manifold.

    Originally the Buick V6 had two right-hand side manifolds so the driver side manifold dumped out in front of the engine. But that was also to clear the stock Ross steering, not saginaw.

    You could do some headers that put the exhaust outside the frame, maybe that would give you the clearance you need?

    I'm in Parker so if you ever get up this way i would welcome the help or at least the guidance. What I don't get is why everything is not lining up straight.

    I have the same manifold on mine. It works well with a Saginaw steering conversion. I added a second joint and support bearing to get my steering linkage to work and clear everything.

    Same here. Steering shaft is split with a support welded to the frame.

    I used 3 u-joints and a pillow block. to move the steering shaft out of the way.

    I had to cut 1" off of the transfer case cross member. I cut the 1" off the passenger side, then weld it back on to the drivers side. I then re drilled new holes.
