    Re: Emergency Brake----old school thoughts

I have to take issue with those two statements :)

Back when I learned to drive the government issued driver's handbook was very clear on the use of parking brakes when parking on a hill. Not two weeks ago I was sitting in a restaurant by the front window watching somebody's parked pickup rolling back down an incline a foot at a time as the engine compression leaked down.

As for not using the brake unless absolutely necessary in this part of the world *not* using your parking brake is the #1 cause of them failing. If not regularly exercised the *^$% cables rust up. If this happens 9 times out of ten if the darn things engage at all they won't let go afterwards:(

One other point- using a foot operated parking brake in an emergency without proper training in the technique is a wonderful way to introduce yourself to Art & Science of the Bootlegger Turn

what. that was a example. you can get the brackets for your jeep through companies like that and use factory parts. Never heard anything bad about r&p before

Yea with a parking break you either use it all the time or never use it. I was always paranoid that the cable would not disengage I almost never used them. Went with the trusty block behind the wheel if I was parking on inclines like that. Still finding myself second guessing using a parking break when I do even if I know that everything is up to par.

I would never trust a parking break to hold a jeep on a steep incline while I got out and pulled the winch cable etc. Simply roll the thing back onto flat(ish) ground and pull some more cable to get to the top.

i agree the the oil soaked parking brake on the t case is marginal at best but its consistently marginal lol. its good enough to get you stopped and even home if your brakes fail. and although its weak i use mine all the time to supliment putting it in gear on a hill. its enough to keep it the engine from turning over which it tends to do on a steep incline. A micro lock doesnt qualify as an emergency brake here in ny because the brake needs to be independent of the hydraulic system.
