Emergency Brake

    My '67 cj5 has no emergency brake. The emergency brake drum is missing altogether from the transmission. Also missing is the emergency brake handle, cable, etc. So my question is twofold: (1) Is there an alternate method for an emergency brake system that does not require the transmission brake drum or, (2) Can I get all the parts to install the original system? Sooner or later I figure an emergency brake will come in handy. Thanks

    If you want the TC mounted brake, I expect you can get all the pieces you need.

    Another option is the cable operated parking brake that comes with the 11" Bendix brake conversion. Just convert to 11" drum brakes.

    There's a transfer case mounted disk parking brake for the FJ40 and other Toyotas that could be adapted, or you could take the idea and implement it yourself.

    Herm has the drum, actuating arm, and brake pads all turned and sold outright. Walcks has a good cable he makes with the pivot triangle thing, spring and wire hanger. All you need then in the ratchet arm which shows up on ebay all the time

    I just bought a 67 CJ5 and it too has no e brake at all on the drums or the transmission. Perhaps it was common to remove these due to issues?

    They become useless when soaked with gear oil from the perpetually leaky transfer case. Perhaps that's the motivation for removing them...

    I was considering getting to mine eventually to clean and rejuvenate it, but "perpetually leaky transfer case" makes me think that would be a waste of time. It think it just moved down the list a few notches.

    There's a lot of discussion in older posts about sealing the transfer case. AFAIK minimal leakage is achievable.

    I cleaned mine really well with brake cleaner, and it worked for a few days.

    Then the gear oil fouled it up and it won't hold on the slightest of inclines. I hate it.

    If rear drum/disc e-brakes are an option, i'd go for that in a heartbeat. Would love to go 4-wheel discs with ebrakes at the rear wheels.

    Is the only options for adding a rear drum e brake to upgrade to the 11" drums?

    Not positive but, I think 11" ers are the only option, at least in terms of using JEEP parts. I have been thinking about fabbing some type of disc to replace the t/case mounted brake assembly but, I was wanting to incorporate a park pin type device rather than disc brake pads. This would avert the pads or shoes getting soaked and would be a very stout parking brake design, I think. Just never got around to making it. Once I get settled in here a little more, I may try it but, then again, I am planning to got to 11 inch brakes so, is there really a need? Other than the fact that it would be different and custom, I can't see the need. Fun project maybe.

    what about a park lock? it would be easier and cheaper than converting the t case brake or rear brakes.

    What if you have a brake line fail? Thats my main reason for not going to one. Also in my state inspection you have to have a parking brake and those don't count for the reason I pointed out.

    I feel that park lock devices such as, say, a Mico Lock, are hard on wheel cylinders. Lose pressure, as stated above, for any reason, and your JEEP rolls away to who knows where. I'd also like to make the observation that there should be some distinction between the terms "parking brake" and "emergency brake." A locking device on the hydraulics or, a device such as I was thinking of building, serves no purpose as an emergency brake since it can't really be gradually engaged like an e-brake. Just something to consider.

    If you search around (low cost example is this $80 bracket yota axle kit http://www.sky-manufacturing.com/new/detaproduct.php?id=128) you can convert the rear axle to gm style disk with that e break for under $500. This might sound like a lot but if you consider you are upgrading to disk breaks for improved stopping, and adding a safe e break(that has years of experience), and getting rid of the trans case e break. It seems like a deal(to me anyway).
