1964 CJ5 Cutting Out Question

    Have you replaced all the flexible fuel lines? If there is a small crack that is letting air in, it will do as you describe.....ask me how I know!!

    Just an idea, would a loose ground cabe somewhere cause this? sounds like somethings come loose and shuting the jeep off, it got knocked around during the tow and now starts?? just a thought.

    Ok well she's back from the shop. Drained the gas tank and flushed out the fuel lines- said it had junk in the tank. So maybe this will do it. Kind of makes sense- I'm driving it to work tomorrow so wish me luck.

    Junk in the tank?

    Yeah could be something in there that is floating around and getting sucked into the fuel pickup.
    The tank isn't all that hard to remove (if they didn't do it all ready)
    Just remove the drivers seat and mount, then the fuel line from the bottom of the tank (underneath the Jeep), then the holding straps and lift it out. Oh, disconnect the electrical connections. Then pull the sending unit and you should be able to get the crud out.

    One of mine came from a PO that said when he got it somebody left the cap off the tank and mud dabbers got in there and built a nest. Or maybe paper wasps.

    That stuff never comes completely out and will float around and cover the pickup when the tank gets low. Then you get to unhook the line from the tank to the fuel pump at the fuel pump end and blow compressed air back through the line to clear it. An old fashioned tire pump will do the trick.

    I'm bettin on the simple fix. The silly electrics. Some ground somewhere or somethin stupid lol.

    Drove it to work no problems. Coming home it was hotter and accelerating from a stop I got on it in 2nd and it died- shifted to 3rd easing on the gas - still dying so I coasted off the road and then made it the rest of the way to the shop.
    They're checking the coil, etc today. I'll probably run out of money before they run out of possible solutions...

    Sorry your problem is proving elusive to diagnose. In High School (a very long time ago) a shop teacher would always ask if you had cleaned the battery terminals when we wanted his help solving a problem. Well, the terminals were almost never the problem but his point was to begin with the simplest things and work up. At the time I thought he must have early dementia but over the years have come to appreciate his perspective. If my first 2 guesses at a problem don't pan out, I actually start with the battery terminals (and ground) and step by step run through a major tune up (set dwell, then timing, then adj carb). As dumb as it seems, I often find something (or a combination) that was just enough out to have symptoms that were not "textbook".

    When I bought my '63 CJ5 it hadn't been started in about 10+ yrs. I had major fuel problems. Pull the fuel line off at the carb and turn the engine over to make sure you're getting good flow and it's clean. If not, run a line to a gas can and see if it solves the problem. I cleaned the tank out, it still had crap in it, so I bought one for $117.00 off e-bay. I rebuilt the carb and run 2 in-line fuel filters. I replaced plugs, wires, coil, ect. Still popped back. Turned out PO had switched the plug wires, but the stuff I replaced was very old and needed replacing and eleminated future problems anyway. It runs great now! Parts from O'Reilly's are much cheaper and quicker to get than some other sources. The carb kit was $19.00 vs $49.00 elsewhere. Get to know your local parts guys if you don't already.     Update-
    Went ahead and ordered a new Solex carb, dual-action fuel pump and coil from kaiserwillys. Picked up the CJ yesterday and drove it home, then into work this morning. It's definitely running better, so maybe it will run for a while. Here's hoping..........
