Ok guys, Ive been lurking and learning from all yalls vast knowledge for the last couple months and now I'm stuck...

I have a 73 cj5, I'm in the middle of rebuilding the transfer case and I can not get the nut off the shaft going out to the front and rear driveshafts. I'm pretty new at this and I dont know technical terms so here is a picture... its that guy right in the middle.

Anyways, is there a way to lock the gears to keep them from spinning? I cant apply good pressure since the whole assembly spins. Do I just need a vice of some sort to hold the gears in place? Ive tried everything, even jamming a small wrench in the gears and the wrench just snapped... Thanks in advance for the help!!

This is a good excuse to get a good 1/2 inch impact gun, nothing better in this situation. Without an impact you have to get something to hold the yoke, possibly a pipe wrench. Another option might be make a large open ended wrench out of plate to fit on the yoke.

I'd say take it to a local shop have it impacted off
looking at that socket wrench next to the hammer your looking to bust some knuckles when the ratchet mechanism pops , I just don't trust cheap tools no more , they just aren't safe ,

A large pipe wrench works well to hold the yoke.

You can also slip some pipe over your ratchet handle for added leverage if you don't have an impact gun. I think the bolts are only on at 150 lbs give or take.

Cheap electric 1/2" impact will do wonders. I've used the ever loving crap out of mine and it just won't die.

Did you see the ratchet in the picture its a dollar store special
it has no chance of busting loose that nut , it would just blow apart into tiny little pieces

I was short on cash and bought this cheap Chicago impact gun from Harbor Freight. It's $50 but with a 20% off coupon (look in the back of most 4X4 magazines and you'll find one) the cost came down to $40. I expected it to be flimsy but it's not so bad for the $$$. I expect it to break soon, but so far, so good. Helped with some very stubborn nuts in seconds. I've certainly gotten my money's worth already.

If this is a one time thing, you might take it to a tire repair shop (with the proper socket) and have them buzz it off for you. They'd probably do it pretty cheap. Especially if you swung by just before lunch with some cash.

What I did when I took apart my D18 was run down to the closest auto shop (less than a mile away) and just asked them if they could zip off the nut for me with their impact. It took them literally 10 seconds to get the yoke that I had spent 2 days trying to get off. I suspect I loosened it for them however :)

Oh, and it didn't cost me a thing

The local shop is probably the cheapest way to go, but I never miss an opportunity to buy a new tool.

"Uh...Honey? I just can't get any further with the Jeep project until I buy a 7.5 HP 60 gallon air compressor ... oh ... and a mig welder ... The kids don't need braces this year..." :)

Success! Between my brother in law, a pipe wrench, a breaker bar and myself the bolts came off. Now I get to clean up 38 years of grease and mud and gunk. Thanks for all the help guys, i would still be working on it but I'm about to head into work until 10pm...
