Was looking at installing a 92 cherokee Tilt steering column in my 66 CJ5 and would like to upgrade the column. I've already swapped a Sagnaw power steering box in my CJ5...Got it out of a 79 CJ5.

Was wondering if anyone could tell me if this is a workable solution? Anyone know what the length of this 92 Cherokee column is? Hoping its one of the shorter ones...like 31"...The column is still in the Cherokee and the junk yard doesn't want me pulling it unless I am buying it ($50).

So I can't really take it out and measure it or get a good look at the spline...and this cherokee steering is really buried in there and hard to get a look at things.

    Thanks

I've done this. I think the column length is about 32". You'll need a custom floor mount and dash mount. Two flaming river/borgeson u-joints and a some DD shafting.

I don't recall the spline counts, but should be able to find out.

Forgot to mention I've already installed the dash, hanging peddles, master brake cylinder and hydraulic clutch setup from a 79 CJ5 into my 66 CJ5....I Swapped/Welded the mounting plate for the master brake cylinder from the 79 CJ5 (has holes in it for the steering column and hanging peddles) into my 66 CJ5.

So I think/hope that eliminates the need to customize the floor and dash.

Still need to determine if the spline is going to match up to the Sagnaw Power Steering box from the 79 CJ5 I just installed. As well as what the actual length of the 92 Cherokee steering column.

    Thanks

I did it on my 2A. I know it's not CJ-5, but it was easy. I used the Cherokee power steering box and dropped pitman arm(which by the way took out all possibilities of bump steer) and I used TJ intermediate shaft between the column and the steering box because it expands and contracts 9"-10" so it will fit most any Jeep. I used the Cherokee upper column mount and attached to the same place that the stock mount was and I pulled out the lower column shaft bearing(nylon) and welded on a flange to bolt it to the floor board and put the bearing back in. The only thing that I have found is that the Cherokee steering wheel oozes(sp?) black sticky stuff out of the little holes in the steering wheel cover if the Jeep sits with the doors closed on a really hot day. You can use the turn signal stalk and connect all the systems and they'll all work. The high/low beam switch at the lower end of the column gets in the way of my feet sometimes but I haven't broken it off yet.

I think you're still going to be stuck with modifying the floor and dash. The XJ column is wider at both the bottom and the top than stock. The XJ column also has a shroud at the bottom that you'll need to cut/grind off. The floor column was easy to make. I used a flat plate and welded a split collar to it that I purchased for about $13 from McMaster-Carr.

The dash bracket was more difficult. I ended up using 4 L-brackets, two nuts and a steel circle from the local metal supply house to make that. I made a bracket that worked with the XJ column top bracket to hold the top of the column.

For the steering shaft, I used the top (steering column end) of the XJ steering shaft and I used a steering U-joint and DD solid 3/4" DD shaft at the steering gear end. These came from Speedway Motors.
