I've been searching all the threads and can't find the answer to my question. When I removed my rear driveshaft from the drum brake on my spicer 18, the nut on the end of the output shaft was loose. What should the the nut be torqued to? There was also quite a bit of oil leaking from around the output shaft. Would the loose nut on the output shaft contribute to the leaking oil? Thanks for your feedback!

The only torque spec I could find in the FSM was for trans mainshaft nut. Torque on that was 130-170 ft. lbs. I dont remember how close in size the output nut is. If nut was loose it would allow the flange to move. I always put some #2 permtex on the splines when going together.

Is the only purpose of the nut to hold on the flange? Or, could over-tightening the nut put too much tension on the output shaft? Thanks!

I have always used an impact gun to put output shaft nuts on in the past. I haven't ever had a problem that way. Torquing is more precise, but not always an option.

Thanks for the link to the great article! It should be a great resource to help me replace the seals in my transfer case and also convert to twin sticks.
