I will be replacing my differential covers. Question, shall I use a gasket only, gasket with rtv black on 1 or both sides, rtv black only, or permatex right stuff only? 2) How much of the rtv or permatex if any?
    Thanks
    Paul

Just my opinion, but I think that you will be much happier if you ever have to go back in if you just clean both surfaces completely, and make sure there is absolutely no oil residue on either one (Brake Cleaner) and then use just the plain gasket.

Gasket with a light film of black rtv in both sides. Works every time.

when i did it i used permatex right stuff and it works great.
getting the cover off again is not a big deal.
just break the seal with a razor blade.
i used that product on everything.
i dont have one drip under the slug.

    Yep, that's what I do.

I would not spend much time/effort optimizing this issue :)

I'd like to try the lubelocker gasket. Looks like a good product. If it seals good and is reusable what's not to like?

    Anybody used 'em?

this question seems to be like asking whats your favoriate color, everyone says somthing different. i think all the ways the OP mentioned work good. i use black RTV only and never had a leak in the jeep or my truck.

I use Mopar engine and axle sealant only

But then I usually have half a tube laying around that I don't pay for anything most of the time:D
its good stuff that we use by itself on the newer vehicles. d44's included. haven't had a problem yet on my jeep

i use the permatex stuff. Just clean it real good and i use my finger to spread the stuff evenly over the whole surface not just blobbed in a little line . i do just the cover and stick it on.

I use the Lubelocker gasket on both the front and rear diff covers and couldn't be happier. No leaks or seepage at all.

I use the gasket and then the Permatex aviation gasket sealer. Comes in a plastic jar with a brush. It appears to be the same stuff as the GM gasket sealer, but half the price.

I just started using the 3M gasket adhesive that Marine shops carry....it's about 12.00 a tube, black and potent enough smell to knock you on the floor...stuff is insane and works better than any of the 5,000 variants of permatex you can use. Tacks up super quick too. I've switched permanently except for on bolts I still use RTV.
