Hi guys. I'm tired of my fenderwell headers with pipes ending in front of the rear tires. No longer want the noise and am looking to go with manifolds. The AMC 360 is stock so I'm more interested in quieting it down rather than performance when I ask which is the better way to go, duel mufflers with both tail pipes exiting out the back, or a single muffler with a Y pipe and single exhaust? I read on line things about a Y pipe equalizing pressure on both sides and all kinds of stuff. Any suggestions and expierience will be appreciated. Thanks.

I would go with a factory-style exhaust - Y-pipe leading into a single muffler and a single tailpipe.

With a V8, if you have duals, the usual approach is to run the pipes to each rear corner. You need a cross-over (balance pipe) between the left and right sides, because the firing order on each bank is not evenly spaced - look at the firing order.

I suggest you find a good muffler shop locally that specializes in custom systems. They can bend up the pipes on the spot, and a good shop can make the fit as good or better than factory. Send the tailpipe out on the opposite corner from the fuel filler.

Also, going up in size 1/4" or 1/2" from stock will make a big difference in the cross-section of the pipe. If you want a quiet, free-flowing exhaust, talk to your shop about what muffler and pipe size they would recommend.

    I have a '74 cj5.
It's in the rebuild stage now but it had a mildly built 360 in it, cast iron manifolds, dual exhaust with small turbo style mufflers, all running inside the framerails and out the back, flush with a 2 tube style bumber.
It was quiet in the drivers seat, and at idle if you were standing behind it it sounded really mean!
Any good muffler shop can bend you up what you need!

It had headeres 'til I got tired of tightening bolts and replacing gaskets. I say go with cast!

As far as equalizing pressure I'm no expert but how much does it REALLY mattter if you aren't racing?

The Y pipe would probably be the way to go if you just want a quiet exhaust on a cruiser.

Thanks for the input guys. I scored some manifolds so I will eventually be going with them and a single exhaust for simplicity and cost. I've got the old headers on for now just to get it running again. It's been a year since the tear down and I'm close. Definately want it on the road again by spring!
