I was scraping the lot this morning in my 67...
    jeep runs great as usual...
when to move a pile of snow and suddenly I had no drive..
both shafts are still in the truck, no oil from a cracked case or something.. no marble noise or anything like that..

Tcase seems to engage in all gears, trans moves into positions but doesnt engage...

    Any thoughts?

Its a F Head drivetrain... too cold and too dark outside to do much more then curse and come inside at the moment..

Does the clutch pedal seem to work properly? If not, check the clutch cable, and the clutch pedal pivot below the floor.

There is an inspection cover on top of the bellhousing that you can take a look a the clutch mechanism. YOu have to remove the cover over the shift lever to get a access to it.

Clutch seems unlikely to me. Most of the pedal resistance for the clutch pedal comes from the pressure plate, and that would change if the clutch were hanging disengaged.

If no gears are broken, I'd first suspect that the transfer case is actually in neutral. First I'd put the Jeep in gear and idling, and see that the driveshafts are not turning. This will eliminate the possibility of broken axles. Then you can easily take the transmission top off and see that the output shaft turns when you release the clutch. That will eliminate everything ahead of the transfer case.

just ran outside... transfer case shifts into gears.. i feel positive engagment...
DS do not turn.. looks like the top of the tranny is coming off.. dont have tools with me and im not really dressed for it today... deff a tomorrow deal.

I can shift the tranny through the gears while the engine is on.. and yes I think I am getting positive pedal from the clutch...

there was a blip of smoke though when I think this happened.. could that be from the shaft breaking? seems more likley from the clutch...

The thought I had was maybe striped splines on the clutch or a clutch disk breaking away from its center hub. I could be totally out there.

I would pull the plate off the back of the t-case to see if that gear is still on there. And to see if it's turning. Because you have the 'glass tub, checking the t-case would be easier than checking through the top of the trans? Note that you can also pull the pan on the t-case to take a look inside.

Makes the most sense to me for a single unit failure with a puff of smoke and a wimper.

Try putting it in gear with your foot off the clutch pedal. If the gears dont grind, then your problem is in the clutch.

Clutch or input shaft. You can also look through the trany fill plug to confirm movement of gear train.

Since you were plowing snow when it happened, are you sure you dont have snow and ice packed up underneath the jeep which is holding the clutch from engaging?

:iagree: if it just quit, no noise, no pop, just a bit of smoke. sounds like the clutch engaged just enough to make a little smoke. heck its worth a try, put it in a heated enviroment over night if you can and see what happens.

That actually happened to me 1 time-I sat there & revved the engine a little and the heat & friction melted the snow out in just a couple of minutes and I was on my way.

This may not apply to your newer jeep, but I had the same thing happen to me in an earlier model cj5. The drive gear in the transfer case (i.e. fits on the output shaft from the transmission), had come off the shaft-- the original setup called for a cotter key to hold the nut in place. Anyway, the nut came off, and the gear slid to the end of the shaft. No noise, no fuss - just didn't go anywhere. However, that might not apply depending on your transfer case model.

    -thanks, mike n.

I would guess some sort of clutch problem. Since it's all at once, I'd guess you broke the center out of the disc. I had to put a new clutch in my grandfather's 47 2A every other year for a while. He had a habit of pushing back the snowbanks with all four tires chained in low range. Weak link in drivetrain = clutch disc.
