I don't know if anyone on the east coast needs a new frame, but this guy states that he has a bunch of old jeep parts.http://annapolis.craigslist.org/pts/2072007827.html

One question that I had was: He says he has a 1955 CJ-5 frame. If I remember correctly, 1955 had the reverse shackles right? Is there any reason that this would be better than my current 1957 frame?

My '56 has them too. Think they changed mid-year of '56 or '57. I can't speak of the benefits, but I've heard of guys modifying their frames to be reverse shackle.

OK Thanks Rondog, in that case I think I'll skip on a new frame. There's nothing wrong with mine (after I fixed all of the cracks) but I though I'd ask just in case.

The shackle on the rear of the front spring does 2 things.
One it gives you a better approach angle when off roading. (more front ground clearance under the bumper)
Secondly it is more of a natural motion for the spring to take when bumping over a large rock. It sort of gives to the rear shackle in stead of being fixed and solid.
Some say it tracks better on the hwy as well.
It is an expensive upgrade kit to make it the military design of the M38A1.

Although in the world of building/ owning a Jeep, 300 or so bucks isn't a huge amount of money.:)

And well worth it if you are going to off road your jeep. Or put the $300 towards the frame.

With stiff springs like the stock ones it may not matter, but if your springs are flexy you may need more driveshaft slip spline.
