Can anyone tell me how the heater control valve (water flow control) was originally mounted on a '62 CJ-5? Mine is just suspended in the middle of the heater hose that runs from the water pump to the front connection of the heater core. I have attached a photo of the valve. I am assumming it was originally mounted to something since it seems to have a mounting plate with three holes. I've stared at the left side engine bay a dozen times and can not spot any place it might have been mounted originally. Is it possible that there was a mounting bracket that is missing from mine? I have a shop manual but it has no info.

    Thanks, Ron

I think that was added by a PO.

I don't think there was a water control valve.

At least there wasn't on mine. My controls lead to a flap inside the heater box mounted to the fire wall.

I have thought about adding a valve like the one in your pic but I haven't done it yet.

The valve would allow you to close off the water circulation and open the vent to allow cool air in from the grille.

    John,

My controls consist of three knobs under the dash, each attached to a bowden cable. One is for the flap in the heater box, one for the defrost flap, and the third for this heat control valve (also one of the knobs turns to control the fan). My jeep is fairly original. I guess it could have been a dealer option/install. The heater box looks just like the ones I see once in a while when someone posts a shot of the left side of their engine bay.

See this thread. There was a heater valve stock for some CJ5s. Mine came with the valve in a box or parts. The PO had removed it and installed some other system up under the dash....all removed now and the heater is stock.

See this thread for apic of where I mounted my valve. I was ot sure but there was a good unused piece of metal that was sticking out from a head bolt and coincidentally, the cable was exactly the right length to reach it. It works and that is what is all about.

One other word on this. I think that actually the valve is supposed to mount on the firewall. My valve was missing the 90 degree flat piece on the back of the assembly that your pic shows that would have made firewall mounting possible. In the thread I referenced earlier, Glenn indicates that the valve is on the firewall in other Willys vehicles. I had no reference when I did mine (and no 90 degree mounting plate), but as I said it works well. It might be a cleaner, more stock look on the firewall. All that matters really is that it is tied down so the push-pull action will work.

    Russell,

Thanks for the thread - the E-bay photos were helpful. The bracket you mounted your valve to originally had a loop in the end to hold the heater hose (mine is still that way). I thought about firewall mounting too -makes the most sense- but can find no evidence of any place that would have worked out. If anyone knows more about that, let me know. The pictures on E-bay show the valve just suspended in the hose. I also thought it would need solid mounting to work with the remote cable but maybe not. I guess I'll experiment.
