Not necessarily! I blew up an aluminum case T-10. Didn't hurt a gear or shaft, just shattered the case...
I re-cased it with a cast steel case, with all the same internals, and never had a problem again. 'course that was in the Race Jeep "Bones" with a severely hopped up 225, paddle tires, and doing 2nd and 3rd gear wheelies in the sand.....

The AGE M22's are pretty tough beasts and offer a 2.56 low. Case is way beefier than standard Muncie and has the nodular iron midplate. Case is actually about 0.2" longer than the stock version. Pretty sure the 18 or that 6 spline AA main will go before the rest of the trans, including the case.

 

Well, in a bazaar turn of events, The Dana 18 got rebuilt with the Tera Low kit, and I had the whole thing cryogenically treated. It may be snake oil, but for the price it was worth a shot. I was out on the carport last weekend and my brother in law asked how it ran. I walked over to the driver door, shook the shifter to make sure it was in neutral and reached up and turned the key. The engine awoke almost instantly but it was not in neutral. I guess since the shifter is so long it seemed like there was alot of play in it, but it was in first gear. The back tire caught my right ankle and layed me down on the carport rather suddenly. The force of being snatched down broke my left femur. I'm down for three months. Clean break, only one rod inserted from the top of the bone, and it really doesn't hurt awful bad, but I'm missing an awesome ride I was hoping to go on in October. Luckily I have good Short Term Disability at work, so nothing's missed there.

Somehow "The project that will probably kill me" seems somehow ironic now.

Installing a neutral safety switch like found on all tractors since the 60's? Wow. I wouldn't say you were lucky, but it could have been a lot worse.

 

Im also glad your on the mend. I nearly ran over my girl frend in the winter of 77 starting my stock 76 CJ5 the same way. I still have flash backs when I am in a hurry and am tempted to cheat.

I wish there were a place to mount a neutral safety switch on a SM465. I would rather have that than the clutch switch, but that's probably my only option.

damn that sucks! how far did the jeep go? I did the same thing in my 2a but it ran right into the back of my brothers 69 nova! Luckily the d ring went right into the back tailight and didnt cause any other damage but my dad or brother wernt far from being in front of it. Gotta be real carefull about that

 

Ouch. My 53 Ford tractor has a simple mechanical starter switch lock out. But, I was stepping off with the engine running and bumped the shift lever with my leg. It engaged just as my 1st foot hit the ground. The big bar tread tire grabbed me at the thigh an tried to pull me under. Got away with a bruised leg.

After your story I will think twice before hitting the starter switch on the dash of my 46 Cj2A while standing next to it. The column shift is deceptive and hard to get into neutral.

 

Randy, I hate to give you a more dangerous option, but I knew a guy who drove his standard shift using his cane to work the clutch.
