Speed Problems

    Took the jeep out tonite for a drive, I have driven it 20-50 miles at a time before, but always kept the speed kinda low. This evening, i took a main road rather than the side roads i normally take, thus had to keep up a higher speed - the jeep ran great at 50-55 but the speed limit was 60, and cars were stacking up behind me, i wasnt pushing that many RPM's, but when i would try to go over 55mph the Jeep would sputter until we were back down to about 50...I have no idea what could be the problem...any ideas guys? ( I am perfectly happy keeping it under 55, just am confused as to why the jeep doesnt want to go faster???)

    Oh - 69 CJ5, Dauntless V6, 3sp - basically all stock... Thanks in advance!

    Check fuel pump pressure. Mine'll run up to 90 with no problem...

    Ok - How would i do that? Just throw a gauge inline with it? (sorry, i really dont know lol) also - what would a good range be for a stock mechanical fuel pump?

    The float might be set to low in the carburetor. Therefore you run out of fuel at higher speeds.

    Could be as simple as a partially plugged fuel filter. You want about 4-5 psi fuel pressure at the carb.

    My vacuum gauge will also test fuel pressure. I just remove the line from pump to carb and connect gauge. Remove one of the wires on the coil (either one) and then crank it and watch for max pressure. If the fuel pump is good, it will hold the pressure because there is a check valve built inside the pump. Pressure as stated above. A pump can produce proper pressure and still not produce proper volume. A separate test needed to do this.

    This is correct, and the symptoms described here could be caused by low volume as well..

    There is a filter in the carb, too. Napa has 'em.

    There could be a filter in the carburetor. Most V6s I've worked with don't have it though.
