82 cj7 motor into an 80

    Sorry to make this so quick but I am getting ready for work.

    I have had an ad up for another 258 for my 80 cj5. I got a hit for a motor out of an 82 cj7, what if any would the differences be between these two motors.

    this is all I know right now and I will be calling the guy either today or tomorrow to get more info. Any help would be nice.

    The 258 changed some between 1980 and 1981.
    Changes in 1981:
    Lighter block
    Fewer crankshaft counterweights (from 8? to 4?)
    New plastic valve cover
    New aluminum intake manifold
    New lighter exhaust manifold
    Some other minor external stuff

    Some of the external parts from the '82 will be a little different, like the power steering brackets, some of the carburetor stuff, some of the bolt sizes - things like that. You should be able to either take the complete engine from the '82 and install it, or else take the '82 long block and bolt all your external stuff to it. You may have some trouble if you try to mix many of the external bits between engines.

    I think I've read somewhere that the intake manifold has water jacketing starting in 82, but if that kind of stuff is included, go for it.

    Yes, the 81-on aluminum intake manifold has a water passage that is fed by the heater hoses. The exhaust preheater and flap is eliminated. The intake also has an internal electric preheater that takes the place of the exhaust flap - you can chose to use or not.

    Would I be able to mount my intake and exhaust manifold to it if they don't come with it?

    Yes. But use all the external parts from your old engine.

    What about engine mounts, I need new ones as the ones I have are more than likely bad. Were there any changes between those?

    So I am getting the motor, it has everything connected including the wiring harness. It came out of an automatic so I asuming that my flywheel and clutch will bolt on, But what I need is new mounting hardware. I have looked on jcwhitney and 4wd.com and could not find anything like that. Does any one know where I can get this stuff.

    More specific please. Bolts for the flywheel and clutch? You can reuse the old ones.

    I need the bolts for the clutch and fly wheel as well as the ones to mount the motor to the tranny. I had all of them, but the place I was storing it got messed up due to the guy in the stall next to mine wanting to use the table I had the parts on so he just pushed it all into a pile (the one time he has been there in about 6 months). I will try to figger out what goes to what but I would like to know if new hardware is available.

    you can get most of the hardware you need at a Napa......bolts for the clutch and flywheel are IMPORTANT to have correct so don't guess.....BTDT

    You'll need the correct pilot shaft bushing for your trans also.

    Well I got the motor. Did not come with all I thought it did, but I got the Intake and Exhuast manifold, and smog pump, the air lines wee broken on the manifold though. When it comes tot he pilot shaft, since I have all my old parts would I not have all that stuff already, if not where would I aquire one at. I am gunna clean it up this weekend and throw some paint on it and see what I got from there.

    If the motor was originally from an auto tranny then it wont have the pilot bushing. Pilot bushings are cheap your local Napa, Flaps, Advanced Auto etc should be able to get you one. Test fit it on your tranny input shaft before installing it in your crank.
