The last bits of my "project jeep 2010" are narrowing down.
Last weekends project-tunes in the jeep.
I didn't want to cut a hole in my nice dash, the radio wouldn't fit under the dash, (the heater is in the way))??
So, why not put a piece of 1" X10" between the windshield and the roll bar and put an over the head radio set up in?? Well, heck, let's add an interior light too!:D
My buddy gives me a radio that "played great" out of his sons car before that went to heaven.
I make up the board that fits perfect, paint it, get a nice under dash cover and mount the radio nice, real nice. The light is out of my '95 Ford Ranger that's going to heaven as soon as my son strips it out of all the good parts for his.
Looks nice. I end Sunday making 2 nice speaker boxes for the speaker in back, (still don't know where to mount the front speaker, but we'll work on that later).
Yesterday I get home from work all ready to mount the speakers and wire them up, I go over to the jeep and the radio is blaring away??? (I had temporarily wired in 1 speaker Sunday to make sure it all worked).
WTF???? The radio needs the ignition turned "on" to work?? (I installed a fuse block when I re wired it)???:?
Reach in turn the radio off, go about my business. Chris gave me a bum radio, I'll have to speak to him about this-later.
Get the speaker monted in the jeep, wired in.
Sheet, the radio must be shorted out or ??? and the "memory" power is bleeding over to the "switched" power or something.
Too bad the radio is mounted nice, Jeese it worked great yesterday and in the shop before I installed it when I tested it out.
Yank the radio outta my Ranger, (sorry son the jeep is in line before you):roll
I'm in the jeep ready to take the radio out when I see....
OH NO! The Amp light is on and the amp gauge is in the negitive!:( The Diodes are cooked in the alt and it's back feeding power into the system, well I guess I need an alt too.
Go in and grab the keys, fire that sucker up, (cuz it makes you sicker to see it isn't charging when it running).
Nope!!!! the "amp" light goes out, the amp gauge goes to plus, it charging, GREAT!
Turn the key off-nothing!:? It won't turn off.............
    WTF?
Yank the fuse outta the radio switched power and the jeep dies-:?
COOL! the power is back feeding from?? to the "on" side of the ignition switch, (you gotta love old jeeps, weird things happen and NOTNING get's destroyed! If this was a "modern truck", everything electrical including the cigarette lighter would be fried)!:D
Re-install the fuse, like a GOOD mechanic I give the radio a few good, "Mike Tyson" shots cuz that's REAL good for all those micro chips in there!
Surprise nothing, it still is playing, (hmmmmm, maybe I'm not hitting it HARD enough)?
I start taking the wring harness apart and it stops? I didn't even get to the wires yet??
Ok I got a wires touching, somehow 24 hours later 2 wires got naked and touched?
I check the wires from radio to fuse, nothing bare, nothing outta the ordinary
OK, I KNOW I have the power wires touching somehwere.
But, they are all separate, taped apart.
I reinstall the wires in the harness and it stays off.:?
Is this a "Candid Camera" Moment? IS someone gonna jump from behind the pile of S*** in my garage and we're all gonna laugh?
Nope, It's just me and the dog and he swears he doesn't know anything about it, (he couldn't have done it, he doesn't have thumbs)
I THINK- I caught the "Jeep Gremlins" at work SOMEWHERE in the harness!:D
Or maybe...... the old jeep just can't take modern technology?:?
    But it's working now......
So I pull the jeep off the lawn and park it down the street- outta sight outta mind!
Let the radio entertain the neighbors, and the oil leaks lube their part of the street!
    Joe
Hello my name is Joe and I own a jeep!
Maybe I should get a "Gremlin bell" like I have on my bikes. Gremlins hate the sound of the bell. When it rights they jump off the bike.

Joe, I think that's why some guys put a cowbell under their front bumper... keeps the gremlins away. :tea:

"Farkle"??? Farkle(s) is the word that Adventure motorcyclist use to refer to add-on parts (i.e., saddlebags, tank guards, GPS mounts, etc.).

Why would you want a radio in your JEEP? How are you goin' to hear :the exhaust manifold(header)tapping, throw out bearing squealing,sm465 whining, dana 20 growling, what use to be brakes squeaking, tail gate chains slapping,33"Mud Kings howling,oh yeah..and patrolman screaming. Those beutiful sounds let me know how far I can travel before turning around,so I wont have to walk.My electrical skills are as follows...Hot wire to positive batt.post.Ground to someplace w/no paint."I'm gonna need a bigger battery"
    Good Luck

I've got a factory AMC AM/FM 8 Track I was going to put in my CJ7 but now I'm a little skeered...never had a Jeep with a radio and I don't want no Gremlins screwing up my Janis Joplin 8 track!
x2 on Farkle being a dice game.

I am by birth a LONG time Farkle, "Frank Farkle" here, we live on Farkle Ave, my wife Fran is a Farkle by marraige!
I was using THAT word to keep it "G rated".
I dunno what got into me thinking I could install a NEW radio in a jeep!:D
I have a AM radio out of one of my projects jeeps, I could install with the stock speaker that used to go behind the grill on the dash, I think that system puts out 5 watts of pure static power!
Hell, I gotta finish leave it in, I done drill the hole in the tube fer the ant-ten-I!
I went out yesterday and gave it a good, "you sons-a-bitch better work" lecture.
The radio or the gremlins seem to behaving.
Prehaps they'll go back to the speedo and screw with that or the wipers, or the ever popular horn?
    Joe
Wouldn't it be a grand world if when you replaced EVERYTHING including the nuts, bolts, washer on something, it worked perfect everytime?

No radio, no carpet, just a four banger and some metal under my feet and gravel flying up into the wheel wells at 10 mph. Sounds like a shot gun...

Yep. As floor mats. Not permanently mounted.
Front and back. Helps in the winter w/ the full
top on. I get samples of carpet from where I
work. So I can swap them in/out for new ones
    when needed.
