Ok, I'm on my second Solex in about 6 years. The first one got gummed up with crud from the tank and I can't seem to get it running properly, so I broke down and bought a second one.

It seems that both carbs have a slightly different mounting flange than the Carter, the Solex has the mounting holes too close together. Not a big deal to modify the carb, but I was wondering if anyone else had the same issue with an L-head.
Maybe I just have a bastard intake manifold.

(And yes, I'm sure that this is the "correct" carb for the L-head.)

Got it bolted up, this one fit without modification.

    Carb & linkage? Check.
    New fuel filter? Check.
    Fuel in tank? Check.
    Battery charged? Check.

All was well until I made it a block from the house. It ran great until then, had lots of power. Now it will die if I try to go above idle and I can still see crap in the glass bowl of the fuel pump. Looks like I'm going to have to pull the tank and flush it out after all.

the solex is picky about fuel pressure, a worn lob on the camshaft will drop the fuel pressure, I installed a electric pump, 3-4 PSI working load, and my solex never misses a beat.

BTW, wider flange= f-head and l heads use a smaller flange, however on the jeepsters the flange for the l head intake manifold was the same as the f-head....I know this from experience.

A gas filter will eliminate any crap.
I have one before my fuel pump and a visible filter before the carb, I can check to see if fuel is flowing.
    They're cheap and good insurance.
