I'm thinking that's going to be trial and error on your part. Cold here is in the 20's and I have no problems with mine. I know you are allot colder than that in the winter. I would think you would be good to take it off by now if it is still on there

If the cover was needed all but a few hours of the day I would not be afraid to leave the cover or a portion of the cover ( like the bottom half or bottom third of radiator ) on until coolant temp started to rise above the 190 - 195 range.

Something to consider with the F-Head in colder climates is the type of thermostat, The common Poppet valve type under the right conditions can over cool an engine that is not being worked hard by not allowing it to actually reach operating temperature, On engines like the F-Head that have a heated intake manifold and high volume water pumps this can affect performance by not allowing the manifold to stay hot enough under light load conditions to properly vaporize fuel.

As part of your cold climate solution you may want to try a Linear valve type like the Stant 180 degree #65358 heavy duty thermostat, The liner valve design controls coolant flow differently keeping the operating temperature more constant with changes in engine load and ambient air fluctuations.

Sorry for being long winded with this but I think the Linear Valve Thermostat is one of the better things we could do to help the overall performance of the F-Head in colder climates.

    thanks fellas
this is just for the start/warm up for the drive to work.
and i want to get my heater to produce as much heat as possible.
i dont want to buy anything for this engine because next year it is getting replaced with a v6.

i just dont want to get it too hot until then.

When I lived in upstate New York my daily driver had a 460 in it that never warmed up in the winter. I purchased an engine heater that was a put in-line with the lower radiator hose. Best twenty bucks I ever spent. I plugged the extension cord in at night and as soon as I started it up I had warm comming out the heater ducts. I kept a floor mat on the front of the radiator to help keep it warm.

As Brian aluded to, those little F134s were designed to stay cool with low oil, low coolant, while working hard in one hundred and some-teen degree desert heat. Make sure your temp gauge works, keep an eye on it, and do like I did with a pre-heater (don't get the magnetic ones, they get lost). Your gas milage will improve as much as your comfort.

I think I have a 180 degree thermostat in mine Bill. I think
190-195f would be a totally safe range to run the Slug

X2 Brian. I agree to watch your temp. The military blankets I have used had a flap you could open when you needed to cool down a little. The items below are a little more expensive than a piece of cardboard.

Midwest Military has NOS grille blanket in stock for $75 to fit M38A1. I think that would look pretty cool.
    www.midwestmil.com Email John.

http://www.armyjeepparts.com/ has a NOS kit with blanket and mounting hardware for $125... Email sales.

This is from we bee webbing - http://www.odcloth.com/m38.html . I don't see a price or part # but the photo is neat.
