I'm going to install a distributor in the Hurricane and know that #1 cylinder should be at TDC. If the timing marks line up, then #1 cylinder should be at TDC, right?

Not necessarily, the engine rotates two revolutions per firing of #1. Best way is to pull the #1 plug and hold your finger over the plug hole while a friend cranks the engine with a breaker bar. When you feel pressure escaping you are on the compression stroke; continue turning the engine over to TDC. This should be TDC for #1.

IIRC the dist will only go in one way in the L & f head engines, so unless you have had the oil pump out you should be good to go

if you take the no4 spark plug out the exhaust valve should be raised when the no1 fires. sometimes you need to flip the bracket over on the bottom of the distributer for it to be at the same spot as the old.

The 'tang is offset, so it really is a one way deal.

I put the no. 1 cylinder at tdc and the distributor dropped right in.:) I ran the engine for 10 minutes setting the timing and took it for a test run and it stopped running after about 1/4 mile. It cranks but does not run. I didn't even open the hood, I walked home, got a tow strap and with help from a neighbor towed it home. Tonight I might look at it.:(

I had time to check under the hood for the no running condition, cap and rotor seemed fine and I replaced the condenser but it still does not run. I'm starting to think it is the distributor.

    Points are usually the problem.
