I have a 70 CJ5 and I want to swap out the 9" brakes for 11". I think I have a handle on it except for 1 detail. I found a possible donor a 1973 DJ Postal Jeep and in the different threads some say that they will work perfect while others say that they could be 10"? I would also like to swap out the manual steering for power and was curious if this was standard for this type of Jeep and does it mess things up that the steering wheel is on the right side?

The RHD steering gear is completely different from the Saginaw power steering gear that you want - avoid.

Don't know about the brakes - if it's propped up in the yard, pull a front hub and wheel as an assembly and measure. You need the inside diameter of the drum.

Thank you for your straight forward answer regarding the PS.

With regards to the brakes "if" they measure out to be 11" will everything else be fine such as the center hole size and did they have an emergency brake setup?

Your '70 model should have 10" brakes all around if it still has the factory equipment. 11" brakes are certainly better, but they're not the dramatic improvement over the 9" brakes of the very early CJs.

Your 70 should have factory 10" brakes, as David said above. The '73 postal should have 11" brakes.
When I upgraded from 10s to 11s, I realized a pretty good difference. When I drilled the 11" drums, I realized a huge difference. I ran postal 11" drums at all corners, drilled them for wet & dry venting, works as well as discs.

I run postal drums on mine too my donor was a 76. I used the steering column as well. But got the gear from an early 80's cj. I can lock up the 33's on my jeep with the 11 inch drums could never do that with the 9"

I just scrapped a set of 11" back plates and drums. They looked like they would swap easily.

I just have three plates and two have the brake assembly still on them.

PM me with what you want to give me plus shipping and go from there if you want them.
