How hard is it to remove the tub to start restoration on the frame and possibly the tub itself? I have a 1956 CJ5. I've got a feeling I'm gonna have to spring for a new tub. The right rear side of the tub flops out when I unhook the tailgate. The frame and front fenders seem very solid, but the rear part of the tub I think is shot. Not worried about the wiring. The only wiring that is intact is the ignation wires. Everything else is gone. New harness, check. Any advice or ideas welcome. Also I've never done this before, so step by step might be helpful.

Tub removal isn't that diifficult. But chances are the bolts are rusted. When I removed mine, the ones that were stubborn ended up snapping off after a little bit of persuasion. Some folks have had to cut some off.

You can take the front fenders and grille off as one piece after you remove the hood. Most of the bolts holding the tub on are pretty easy to see. I had to use a sawzall to cut many of mine loose. I just sawed between the frame and tub.

I just put a breaker bar on with a wrench on the other side and snap all the bolts. Everyone thinks it sucks when a bolt snaps. I love it, saves time. I think your biggest feat actually is the steering wheel. Theres a few methods to do it. I fought to get the steering wheel off and with friends lifted the tub over the steering column. I think thats pretty common.

Steering Wheel was the most difficult part. Free Beer seemed to bring enough friends over to lift the tub off.

Steering wheel shouldn't be a problem. Remove the steering box/column from the frame. There's 3 bolts at the frame, 2 bolts on the dash clamp, and the drag link.

I agree...I did the same thing, actually some of my body bolts were already missing, so I just pull out the torch for all of them except the one in the front center of the lower grill...disconnected everything from under the hood that was attached, and actually I just pulled the steering wheel off, left the column...but I had the luxury of having a forklift, slid it in under the roll cage and lifted!

Just as easy putting it back on...makes doing any additional work that much easier!! Good luck!
