Hello,I have finaly got back to working on my 66 cj-5:v6:.
I just recived my rebuld kit for my T90A-1 3speed today, and noticed that the Synchronizer Keys are not the same size as the ones in my T90A-1.The 3 keys that came in the kit are skinner than the origonal ones.
I noticed that one of the origonal Mainshaft Bearing has the IH stamped on the race. could i have a international T90?or is the diffrent sized Synchronizer Keys an improvment to the origonal?
    This is a 1966 cj-5 built in canada with the 2258 v6,T90A-1,D18

Um, I don't think the T-90 ever came from the factory behind a V-6. I'm sure someone else will chime in here...

It should have been the T-86AA behind the 66 V6. Yes the T-90A will work but has to have the input shaft changed out to a longer one from T-90J. That is what I had to do to mine because I could not find a T-86. Of course that happened before I found this forum.

I have a trans with T90A-1 cast into the side of it, but it's all T90J from the long input shaft to the different 1st gear ratio (2.79 vs. 2.98).

Sounds like you have a T90J to me, but like mine, the case itself says "A". I haven't ever rebuilt one, so I'm far from an expert to gtell you if those keyways are different or not.

IH did use a version of the T90 in Scouts, but they called it...another designator(can't think of it right now)
The IH version also ran reverse cut gears and internal parts were not interchangeable with the Jeep version. I wonder if the shift dogs are a part of that. It sounds like it.
Maybe Nickmil can confirm, it's been a long time for me to recall.
One of the IH sites can prolly confirm that as well.

If it's got the adaptor (you might want to look on it for stamps to see which one it is) usually the only diff is the input shaft for the V6 swap (done it many times). I would contact your source (Novak?) and ask the question to see if you have the wrong part. Also check with Herm the Overdrive Guy as he is real knowlegable on the part diffs.

As to why you have a T90 vs T86 - 66 didn't come with the V6 Std. It was (and is) a common swap.

Another clue might be whether or not the adapter is aluminum or cast iron. IIRC, factory V6 that came with the T86 had a cast iron adapter between the bellhousing and the trans. I think every t90 aftermarket adapter I've seen has been aluminum.

I'm a little slow this morning as I've just had my first cup of coffee :D, but did you read the number off of the shift tower or the transmission case. It's important to look at the case as the towers can be swapped.

Pictures would help us help you as well.

I've run into two different sizes of inserts for the T-90's. Wide and skinny as you've noted. Unfortunately I haven't been able to pin down if it's a T-90a vs. T-90j thing, a T-90 IH Scout thing or what. I think the point most are trying to make is that the T-90 is not stock for your year and engine and so someone has changed things around. Without knowing what they put in you'll have to contact the suppliers and explain the problem you are having. Once you explain the issue they should be able to help you out there. Be aware that it is possible to put T-90 guts in a T-86 case and vice verse. Easy way to check is if the 1st/reverse slider is angle cut or straight cut. If angle cut then you have T-86 parts in the case. If straight cut T-90 parts.
