I have a 56 cj that I am currently building. Was planning on using a dodge 3.9 with ax-15, but now have to yank it for a cracked block. ( a whole story in itself). Now am considering an 85 chevy truck as a donor . Truck has a 305/4speed(think it's an sm465) . Any thoughts on fitment? Will this motor fit in the engine bay? After much frustration, seems like the chevy line is the way to go because of part cost. If not that combo , any reccomendations? I would really like to jam an 8 in this thing! Is there a good ford option?
    thanks

There was a recent thread with lots of input on this topic. Search.

Google: "site:earlycj5.com chevy V8 engine swap"

The 289/302 Ford is a popular swap ...

thanks for the input. I have read some the threads and novak sight before I posted. Mainly I was looking for the opinion of someone who had already done the swap, so thanks to 57cj5.
Patrick , if my question bored you ( sigh) why did you bother to respond?

It didn't bore me. This subject has been covered at great lengths here in the past. Using the search function, you can read these discussions and probably get the answers to the questions you have. The more times the same questions are asked, and the same answers given, the harder it starts becoming to find this information in the archives when someone does do a search.

I'm planning on putting a TBI 4.3 into my jeep this summer, you may want to consider this option since the engine is so short it will fit nicely in the engine compartment.

Easy bud. We realize you’re new at this but this is a technical board, not the place to start ****, particularly not with one of the board’s best moderators.
To answer your question yes, it will fit. You will have to do some work to make it fit because I don’t know of any bolt in swap kits for our older Jeeps like you’ll find for newer CJ’s and Wranglers. The radiator has to move forward and the engine has to be placed in the frame.
The 305 isn’t the most desirable SBC but it’s still a V-8 and will make about any CJ go like greased stink.
The SM465 is an excellent transmission and coupled with an Advanced Adapters transfer case adapter for your Dana 18 transfer case makes for one of the shorter GM transmissions you could put in your Jeep. This is important because rear drive shaft length suffers with the longer GM driveline and the shorter your rear drive shaft the less room your rear axle has to move before binding a u-joint.
