starter

ok folks..with the new flatty. everytime i started it it got progressively slower to turn,like the battery was dying..the battery had no markings at all,,i checked to see if i was getting 6 volts or if it was dead...well..it had 12v..doh..thanks previous owner..anyway..i went and got a new 6 volt(everything appears stock 6 volt,,generator,regulator,starter,,etc..did the same it would crank over reallll slow once or 2x's then nothing..a few times i could hear the drive gear pop out,motor would spin over slow and then like it was turning in the starter but not the drive( think whir..whir....zzzzzzzzzzz)..i got ****ed and put a jumper cable from the positive terminal to the starter terminal.... didnt work...other than checking to see of its grounded correctly..any other checks..

 

try tapping it with a hammer.

thats odd though. I use 12v on my 6v starter and it works just fine. in fact, it cranks the engine over really fast.

 

the starter may need a good cleaning, sounds like oil or grease buildup

 

yes it does. you cant keep crankin it over for long periods of time though.

 

when you said it didnt work when you jumped it straight to the starter did you mean it was slow to crank there as well? If yes then theres no other option than to pull the starter off and clean and inspect it. Its really easy to pull out. Sounds like its gummed up

 

6V electrics don't last but a minute or two on 12V except the starter. Bulbs, regulator,generator gauges are probably toast. Depending on how long he stayed on the starter, it could have burned windings also and would cause very slow (lack of power) cranking.

Sounds like you have run it, what did the ammeter show?
Umm, was the 6V battery fully charged from the begining?
About the only other thing I can think of is checking/cleaning the ground connections to frame and the frame to engine strap.

Well, you need to determine if your regulator and generator are 6 or 12 volts.
A 6 volt charging system isn't going to charge a 12 volt battery.

If you end up with a 6 volt system make sure you have very large battery cables.
