CJ5 tailgates

I currently have a 70 CJ5 with a tailgate that needs to be replaced, no problem, right. Well I put an add out for a tailgate and a guy responded, but the tailgate didnt look like mine. It looked like one off an 80's CJ7. When I mentioned it to him, that it was not what I was looking for and what I thought it looked like, well he was not happy and promptly told me that they came from his CJ5 and that I was wrong, they were on CJ5's as well. What gives? Help me out here please.

Yep. Details are different over the years (lettering, bracing), but that's the only type used on a CJ-5.

 

Just because it came off a cj-5 doesn't mean that it was stock. Jeep owners are resourceful. You can find all kinds of non-stock stuff on them. His tailgate is probably an aftermarket or home grown add on.

Nope, all they changed was the letters stamped into it and little things, just like timgr said.

 

This is just like to one on my '68 CJ5.
