Can anyone ID this heater?

Does anybody know what this is? Is it an original Jeep heater, or an aftermarket?

I scored this heater on eBay, got it cheap...$10 or $20, can't recall for sure. It was listed as "removed from a mid to late 50's Willys Jeep". That's all I could get out of the guy. Anyway, it looks dirty and rusty, but the blower runs great, 2-speeds, moves lots of air. And I'd bet NAPA has a replacement. No real damage, it should clean up great.

I haven't dismantled it all the way, but the core looks excellent and he said it held pressure. The cable operates a hot water control valve, and it moves freely. It's got scads of vents all over the bottom, and the diverter for the defroster moves freely. The defroster outlet "looks" like it'll line up fairly close to the defroster manifold thingie below the windshield.

I don't have my tub here for a fitment check, but from looking at my photo archives it "looks" like it will fit perfectly on my '56. It'll mount to the passenger side firewall, the blower housing will mount flat against the engine side of the firewall and seal tightly, I'll just have to cut a hole in the firewall for the blower to breathe, it uses cabin air.

So, I think it may just be a dandy score, and after blasting/painting it should work fine. I'll need a control cable and switch arrangement, but I'll worry about that later.

    Anybody know whut it is?

Sure looks to me like it'll fit perfectly here, right at the bottom of the flat vertical area, just above the bend for the foot area (after I patch all the holes up first).....

And the blower housing should mount and seal real well here, I think....

    Thoughts?

FWIW, the '56 factory heater location is on the passenger side, and the '69 is on the drivers.

Hence my interest. I think this will be a dandy once it's reconditioned, I'm just looking for clues to its origin. Who made it, is it a stocker or aftermarket, Harrison, Sears, Monkey Wards, etc. Sure looks like it was intended for '55-'56 CJ5's, before the drivers side "placebo" heaters came about.

Should I paint it black to match everything else on the Jeep that won't be red, or how about a lovely hammered silver finish? Ima likin' that silver finish.

    Interesting bit of trivia-

There appears to have actually been no such thing as a factory heater for '56, or for '55.

The knockouts on the passenger side firewall line up with a particular model of Harrison heater (which was originally designed for the trucks) but there is no listing that I can find anywhere in the documentation (FSM, parts manual or owner's manual) that lists a heater as an option.

I guess i didn't catch the year of you cj5 so sorry.Of course the reason I have a stocker for sale is like you said ,they didn't work very well.I bought a high output under dash heater from Summit. frees up a lot of room under dash as well. good luck with the E-pay find.

Well, I'm PO'd! My tub is home now, so I tried a test-fit of this heater, and it won't work! Motor housing is too big. [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

So, again, does anybody know what this may be out of? I'm going to have to put it up for sale, and it would be nice to have an idea which direction to try and market it towards.

It's a shame too, the inside portion would have worked perfectly.

Hmmm.Looks like you can take off the motor from the inside portion. Can you mod a different motor on it?

Hey Kevin! Yeah, the motor housing is separate from the other part, the vehicle firewall would be sandwiched between the two parts. The problem is that the motor/blower housing is too long by 3+ inches, it extends way down past where the passenger floorboard meets the firewall. A whole new housing would have to be designed and fabbed.
