spring eye hole size question??

just wondering...what other stock leaf spring from a jeep has the same eye hole size as my cj5??

i am wanting to get the two piece leaf spring bushings for something else and cut them down to size. i hate the idea of the one peice bushing with all that extra wiggle room...

for example could i get the two piece poly bushings for a 76 and up cj5 and just cut them down to size?? i guess i would have to cut the metal sleeve as well..

any help would be appreciated

I'm not following your comment about the 'wiggle room' with the one piece bushing. I recently used one-piece poly bushings in my spring upgrade, and they were very snug.
I think the diameter of the '76-up bushings are larger, and it would be difficult to make them work.

 

this is what im talking about...

unless my hangers are too wide. i dont think the one piece bushing will take up all that room. it was to my understanding that the one piece bushing sits just about flush with the edges of the eye hole....??

what does yours look like?

 

Notice how the poly bushings are thicker on the ends? The ends are to fill up the space between the end of the spring and the inside of the hanger. No, the stock one's will not fill up that space. Mine were the same width as the springs. You could use washers to fill up that space if you went stock bushings.......

now does anyone else make the two piece for the intermediate cj-5(my 74)??

i was looking here and they say that the bushings are not compatible with most aftermarket springs. now i have superlift springs that came on the jeep. will the daystar ones work?? and do you think these would work?? but it says that the actual product my vary from the pictures. you think all the poly bushings are the two peice?? cause one time i believe i contacted one of these people and asked for the real image and they sent me a picture that looked similar to the oem bushings.....? just confused...

I have superlift springs for a CJ8. I called superlift and they told me the springs used the same bushings as stock. I got a set of stock poly busings off ebay for 20 bucks a set for the whole Jeep.

Were I you, I'd call them and ask them what bushings to use. I bet they are stock size..........

I just made my own from some hard urethane rod and machined bronze thrust washers for both sides. Used grade 9, 1/2 bolts, drilled for grease and safety wire. If time is free, pretty cheap to build, but probably more than $20.

 

I recall from an earlier thread (per Jim/jpflat2a?) that there are two different widths of bushing for the last of the Intermediates. My parts book confirms this, with a 921055 that's 1-13/16" wide and a 5352659 that's 2-3/64" wide. There's no change in spring width, but the 5352659 inner shell sticks out more.

Don't know why they did this, but I expect it explains the gap you see when you use the 921055-style silent block in some Intermediates.

 

ahh finally the answer. well thats lame that they did that. so how do you know if your getting the right part?

 

A fender washer on each side should take up the extra "space" nicely.

 

I've got the same problem after removing my old rubber bushings.
I,ve had some poly bushings made up, and I will just have spacer washers turned for me to make up for the free sideways play.

 

umm where did you have these bushings made up at??

I'm in Capetown SA.
I've had some bushings made up like the ones in Patrick's picture.
It works perfect for the rear of the front leafpack, but I need to make spacers for the front top spring hanger to make up the space of the shoulder of the bushing.

Maybe I must add a pic, I'm confusing myself!

 

yeah you know i took machine shop last semester and i would think if you had the right polymer you could just put it on the lathe and make it what ever specs you desire.... the question is where do i get a round stock of that poly stuff??

Did you use these at both ends of your springs? Do the ECJ5 bushings have a shoulder, like in the picture? What is the overall width of the bushing? Where do the bushings move, between the sleeve and the poly, or between the bolt and the sleeve? Is a special grease required?
