LOL - I can see it now - the great early cj5 container exchange - we send parts hard for them to get - they do the same for us :)

I'm still looking for a VW 1.9 TD donor , I have found various TDI but they're difficult to adapt because have electronics. I have been talking with an electrician mechanic who can adapt me a VW TDI, but man, he has said me that the price for adapt the wires&sensors of this engine to the Jeep is 1500-1800 euros !!! very expensive... so I'm still looking for an old school 1.9 TD in good condition and at correct price.

The TDI can be electronically uprated up to 180-200 HP easily, but I don't need this power. The 1.9 td can be mechanically uprated to ~115HP (enough power for what I need) and without any electronics that one day break up in the middle of the mountain.

You could always use a TDI engine with the mechanical injector pump (MTDI) that way you don't need to deal with the electronics and computer.

RE: the manual Saginaw swap. As far as mounting the sector box, they will be no different than a power unit and the same amount of work. There is a lot of good material both on this web site and others for this conversion. The only thing additional for power is the pump and hoses. Most (or perhaps all) of the manual Saginaw boxes use a smaller diameter pitman shaft which could cause problems if you are looking for a dropped pitman arm sometime in the future. After using a number of Jeeps both ways, I strongly recommend the power, especially if you intend to do much off road. You will derive a lot of benefit for very little additional work.

Hello and thanks you all for your interest and suggestions.

I finally found the engine I wanted, the 1.9TD AAZ with few miles, in perfect condition, all the whole complete and the best is the price: only € 300!! The donor was a bumpy Seat Cordoba; I've also used the donor to get the rear calipers to install rear discs on my jeep.

I spent many months looking for this engine. For reliability and easily always I have rejected the TDI engine (I know well these engines) and I prefer the simplicity of the AAZ engines. A complete TDI with 110 or 130 H.P. with complete electrical installation and the computer I could get for about 700 € ; but I think the electronics only leads to trouble in the long run ...

well, here some picts. taken with the mobile. When I get the engine at home I'll put more picts.

I've resolved all the problems. I have used a '94 VW Jetta TD. flywheel, '89 VW passat bellhousing and a '06 Audi A3 TDI starter donor; now I have a frankenvagen engine R)

The first problem I got, was the flywheel. My engine uses the same system than TDIs with the bi -mass flywheel that incorpores the press clutch and is made of two parts. I don't like this system. Also this system is difficult to engage the starter in front position.

Second problem was find a new starter to put in front position in the jeep's bellhousing.

Thinking about how to do it, I have decided not use the jeep's bellhousing and try to mate the VW's Passat bellhousing to the jeep's gearbox (is easiest), plus I get hidraulic clutch :)

I have all the whole parts assembled and the engine connected to a battery and all runs well!!

Now I need a bit of time to take pictures to post here.

the new standard flywheel (also has larger diameter and weigh )

    [IMG][IMG]

look at new clutch size versus the original clutch.

Alright, going to be interesting to see how the match up of vdub bellhousing and t-90 tranny match. keep up the good work bud. Oh ya what are you planning on doing about the slave cylinder at the top of the bell???

I'll use the slave cylinder to have hidraulic clutch, there is enough space and it passes over the gearbox.

Today I've cleaned the bellhousing and have cut off the diferential (remember the donor is a front traction and incorporates the dif. with the bellhousing)
