my starter finally wet the bed.
it used to make a screeching sound about half the time and the rest of the time would work.
now all it makes is a whirring sound.
none of the auto parts stores here know what i am talking about.
as far as i can tell after reading many posts
a toyota land cuiser starter will and or wont work as a bolt in replacement.
(it depends on which thread you believe)
where can i buy any starter that will bolt on and work?
    part numbers please.
    thank you for your time.
    bill

Have you taken the starter out? I had a similar issue, a roll pin had sheared.

    i found this online:

You can use a starter from a 1964 thru 1983 Toyota Landcruiser 4.2L. Nippondenso Part number 02800-2362/4.
O'reillys Auto Parts sells it under Ultima Part # 16224
You can also find it under a Lester rebuilt # 16224
Or you can find it under an ACE rebuilt # 649

i ordered the ultima #16224 for $58.80 and if it dont work i get my money back.
    it'll be here friday.

What you describe sounds like a bendix to me. Walcks is where I get most of my F and L head parts.

Am I the only one that has starters and generators rebuilt or have the costs become too high. It's been a couple of years since I last did one, but I find them to be much more reliable than the Chinese junk at the auto parts store of today.

Not judging, just wondering if I'm missing something.

It can be hard to find someone that still does that, and it's getting more costly. I bet I couldn't get my original starter rebuilt for less than the cost of a new Toyota starter, including the core charge. FWIW, my starter is a 6v, and I'm going with 12v electrics. I'm told the 6v starter should work fine, should spin the motor with gusto, as long as I don't do any long periods of cranking with it and overheat it.

But it's really nice to know about this Toyota starter option!

Beth, you're not the only one. I have stuff rebuilt by a local guy, right down the street from me. Some things aren't worth having rebuilt, but harder to find items or like my '57 that I want to keep completely stock I have him rebuild stuff for me. He does hi torque starters as well.
Some stuff just isn't worth it because of labor costs and parts availability. Some stuff is well worth it.

I had an original starter rebuilt for $130 by an electrical shop here in town. The flat spring thing broke after very little use. If I can get a Toyota replacement that is newer technology, as far as technology can change in a starter, I'll get the Nippon next time.

I had my starter rebuilt a few years ago but I know it cost more than the $58.00 for the Toyota starter.

It defeats the purpose of rebuilding if they use all Chinese parts to rebuild it. Most rebuilt items seem to have a very short life these days.

Disconnect the battery first. Disconnect the top end of the cable and remove it with the starter - it will be easier to put the cable on the starter on the bench.

Turning the bolts can be awkward. You may have to use an open end wrench and keep flipping it over until you loosen/tighten the bolt.

with the toyota starter you may have to put the top bolt in from the back and use a nut on it due to the location of the solnoid
