I've seen two speedos on the '55s - the one you show, and the one I have - with curved glass. That speedo you show is indeed the first CJ-5 speedo, which was later replaced by my K-S speedo, then on the Stewart Warner in late '56/'57. My serial number is a later '55 serial, so conceivably it may have received the new stock of later speedos. There is also no evidence that I know of showing at what serial number the change was made.

Yup, the change was documented in the parts manual-

    http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36725&highlight=speedometer+king+seely

According to the manual the black face/white needle unit is a Stewart-Warner unit with an external voltage regulator, this was replaced in '57 with the S-W orange needle units that incorporated the voltage regulator into the gas gauge.

Okay, now I am thoroughly confused, as my black face/white needle speedo is clearly marked K-S and has no external voltage regulator.

By golly you may be right-

I double checked the parts book & the serial number data base, the K-S units are listed up to s/n 49246 which appears to be early-mid '57. These were replace by a S-W unit that lasted until s/n 61685 which would be later in the '57 model year ('57 ran from s/n 45923 up to 68815).

So it does indeed appear the the black face/white needle unit is a K-S, I had always thought it was a Stewart-Warner.

    My humble apologies

I have that speedo. It is a K-S with K-S gauges. The S-W gauges will not fit. They are too deep by something like 1/8" or so. The inside of my housing (or the backside of the speedo face) was stamped May 1956 IIRC.

Thanks. Gald you like it. It's not for sale.........right now. I'm planning on using it.

But I might use a set of SW gauges. Not sure.

Yeah man, that's a purty one!!! I'm adding that photo to my collection, if you don't mind. Are you putting it in a '56?

Is your glass rounded or flat?

I have two of those (not that pretty, unfortunately), and the glass is flat on both. Might even have three, can't remember. Got another one coming from a guy on eBay, it's better than any of mine.

Glass if flat and appears to be identical to the newer CJ gauges. FWIW, if you rebuild it, the orgional rubber seal might be unuseable. If it is, look for some screen spline molding. It is almost the same dimeter and fit perfect.

Feel free to take picts. I have some of it taken apart http://s213.photobucket.com/albums/cc19/aallison28/ around page 10 or later. They are easy to rebuild. Just takes time and patience.
