please help 75 cj5 rear end walking

    hello to all fellow jeepers, i have a issue that maybe someone can help me out with im at a loss here, i have a 75 cj5 with a built 360 pushing 415 hp when i take off slow it feels like the rear end is walking around or moving, ( like a left to right wiggle almost) if i drive it easy not giving it much gas it goes down the road just fine ,but if i get on it every time i shift when i let off the gas it wants to dart right but when i get back on the gas it wants to dart left, it has pro comp 2.5 springs with conn ferr shackels ,im also running a dana 44 with power trax lock rite locker with 4.27 gears with 33 x 12.50's , every thing appears to be good and tight, no rust or rot issues on frame or spring mounts, i have no idea but its pretty scary to get on the gas and have to shift, any help would be great or at least a starting point, to much arch in spring? to tall shackle? thanks again to all :flag:

    Moved to the proper section.

    Could be the locker.... I've driven some Detroits on the street that behaved like that. The most noticeable was in a Blazer with a 454 and 37's.

    thanks for the input, how would that cause a violent change of direction when you let off the gas to shift, im guessing when it darts back the other way its from over compensateing? just dont make sence,

    Throttle steer is common with lockers. Check your aur pressure and make sure both are at the same PSI.
    One other thing to check, make sure the axle centering pins are still there.

    Throttle steer is common to any vehicle with horsepower. The chassis twists which changes the suspension dynamics causing the vehicle to want to "drive" one direction or another. I'd check the things mentioned but also make sure your spring to axle u-bolts are torqued properly, there are not cracks in the frame around the spring mounts, and the spring/frame bushings are in good shape.

    Welcome SNIKLE..... I can relate to your problem to your problem. I think my first post was regarding this same topic. I have pretty much done all I can based on the suggestions of others but still have a little of the rear axle steer but it is less now. I recently put on the M.O.R.E bomb motor mounts which helped alot. Expensive but very solid, and my old OEM mounts were toast. I think the only thing holding it in was the transmission mount and LUCK:rofl: FYI... I also have a 75, 360, 4.5 lift (all new), and no locker in the rear. I am currently having a 401 built to replace the old 360 and am concerned the problem may get worse. There is a lot of knowledge on this sight and many people have this same problem and just live with it, which I have done too.... but I still don't like it and want to fix it even if it means reinforcing the frame and some kind of traction bar. I have an appt today with the owner of Extreme Gear Offroad to go over the problem. He says he knows how to fix the problem ( I hope). I will post any results tonight.

    well i talked with 4 wheel drive where i the power trax lock rite was bought they said its chance that the locker is making the jeep "throttle steer" said its the nature of the beast, said its not un locking when i shift, which to me makes zero sence, also above blueflu brings up the axle centering pins ??? can i get a quick run down what involved with checking that and or fixing if thats it? thanks again

    cj5doc, thanks, and PLEASE let me know what if any you find out, i really meed to sell my jeep but hate to im affraid to let some one even test drive it, in the trails and on the dirt it dosent seem to be a issue ,,,any takers? lol

    It's the pin in the leaf pack that the axle lines up on. Easy to see it'll be sticking out of the bottom of the spring pad/perch on the axle.

    Even my 4 cly Jeep has throttle steer, so check all the bolts and then just have fun. ;)

    If you sell it to a true Jeeper they will understand when you tell them it has a rear locker.

    Have you checked your rear axle u bolts to be sure that they are tight?

    wasn't this just discussed elsewhere here ?
    if all your suspension nuts/bolts etc are good and tight, and no other mechanical malfunction or problem, you're just fighting your engines torque force.
    Sounds normal to me.

    Would it be worth removing the rear drive shaft and going for a test drive using only the front diff to power the Jeep. Depending how it feels then, maybe you could isolate the problem from there?

    yup but you run the chance of toasting the front end type parts......Ive seen a full size blazer do that blew the rear shaft so run the front lasted about 30 seconds....
