has anyone here ever had a cj5 with the perkins engine? i have one (just the engine)& have the pump repaired and next is to get the starter repaired- drive is shot so it has to go to shop- i am probably not going to install this in a jeep- just got it in a trade/deal & thought it would be neat to get it running. it is a 192 perkins & came with all the trim to install in a jeep. thanks

    There's a few members around.

From what I hear the diesel was pretty speedy all things considered.

I saw one, a new one, just about the time I bought my CJ5 (1966) at a local hill climb in Las Cruces. The one thing I notice the most is the vibration! I thought that engine was trying to swap ends on that Jeep. The rig drew a lot of attention at the gathering, so I assumed that it was a rare bird! I don't think it would climb hills as good as the 'New' V6s, but it seemed like a sturdy rig.

A couple of years later I was on a trip down the San Francisco river in Western New Mexico and there was a diesel land rover among the group. At one place the land rover, which had an exhaust stack and a air intake stack, was moving through a body of water with only the drivers head and the two stacks exposed. Pretty darn impressive!

I haven't seen another diesel Jeep in 42 1/2 years.

yeah it would be cool to see it running a cj again- i have two, a 60 that will be my grandson's and a 61 that is being "militarized" to an m38a1. i will get this engine running this year & keep everyone posted on it's progress. when i got it the story went that it was stuck up & the owner tried to pull it off- no go. wound up the pump was stuck & snapped the drive shaft to it so i took an old back hoe pump & had the shaft changed to the 192 pump & calibrated so all that is supposed to be left is the starter. engine is free & has compression where it should be & no metal in the oil filter so we will see. stay tuned!
