I have a question on the rear axle shims on my 1948 cj2a.I am putting on 11" brake drums and when I removed the 9" drums I took off the shims and threw them in a box.I need to know how much of the parts I need to put back together to measure the axle endplay. Thanks

Well, I was looking for the spec yesterday when I was putting my axle back together, I didn't find it, but you will need the shims for both sides and one will be thicker. Almost 1/8". Thats the bearing retainer. The shims go on first, then the retainer is what puts the preload on the bearing. The backing plate goes on next I'm not sure what that spec is though.

It would be nice to know;)

Thanks.I have the specs according to the Jeep Rebuilders Manual;0.001"-0.006".The main thing I was wondering is if all I need to do was put the shims on, then the retainer, bolt it together then check the endplay and adjust as needed. The info I found so far dose'nt go into very good detail.Barry

All information thus far looks to be right to me. One addition. I do not pack the bearing until AFTER I have adjusted shims / end play. I find that it is far easier to check the clearance with the a dial indicator and magnetic base, with the bearing being dry. I also only use 2 bolts in this process, across from each other. Once the shim thickness is set, I again remove the axle and hand pack the bearing. Then, install the entire set up with the shims as set in the prior step. Hope all is helpful to you. R.

Thanks for the info. The other question I have is some info I have found says to tap the end of the axle shafts to seat the bearing before you check the endplay.I hav'nt changed the bearings or pulled axle shaft. Do I still need to do this? Barry

didn't even think to look in that:oops:

probably wouldn't hurt to tap it lightly. Just be careful of the threads on the end of the axle shaft;)
