Got my 73 CJ5 back today. I was the fellow who was trying to replace the rear main engine seal. I finally caved!! Took it to a mechanic, he said it was one of the toughest seals he had ever tried to remove. He finally had to disconnect trans, and transfer case and slide them as well as bell housing back, remove flywheel, drop crank shaft down as far as possible, and peel the seal out with a flattened welding rod. He also changed the rear universal joint, front rear differential seal, new differential dope and gasket, new oil pan gasket, 5 qts oil. He also noticed the drivers side valve cover leaking, someone had put the wrong length bolt in, so he put a new valve cover gasket and bolt in. Finally tally...... $430.
What do you guys think fair price?

Now she is not leaking a drop of oil!! Runs about 20-50 psi oil pressure.

Next project... exhaust fumes are pooring into the cab when in 3rd and up to speed. Gotta fix that or the wife won't ride.

Sounds like you got a lot of work for the price.

Let us know how you fix the exhaust fume issue. I have a similar problem.

    Thanks
    Cliff

Depending on your pipe, I would put a piece of flex pipe on it and try various locations till I find the spot that doesn't blow back..

Sounds like a good price. Nobody around here would do that much for $430 bucks. Good deal.

    Sounds good to me.

Can you tell me more about this "mechanic" person you took your vehicle to? :)

Just a shade tree guy. Does mechanic work on the side, usually takes him longer but if you got the time he is cheaper. I am not sure about the exhaust leak I thougt it was coming in through the heater, but now I believe it is coming in around the plate bolted around the shifters. Sorry not sure what you call the plate.
