other than oil leaks and the dreaded whine....no. I figure it won't hurt to check the intermidiate shaft et al while I have things torn down.

Correct me if I am wrong (I frequently am), but can't you remove the OD unit without having to remove the tranny and t/c?

Yes you can, it is not terribly hard to do. Biggest pain is getting the special keeper lined up when putting it back together.

Yeh, if the whine is much more than just noticable, going thru it is good at this time. As NickMil has mentioned before, it may be the shaft/brgs or something else. When I did my orig 1.125" shaft case, it did not help at all. I swapped that case out for a 1.25" case and did that shaft too ... though the whine wasn't bad, it's barely noticable now and it fixed the nasty growl that occurs between accel and decel

    first off welcome aboard
Herm is the guru for all things OD, here's his info...
    http://www.hermtheoverdriveguy.com/
I found my tranny mount seperated and a motor mount broken yesterday :(.......Herm suggested looking at the shift dogs so I'm gonna pull the OD today.....I'll report later

Ok I got the OD off and did an inspection of the shift ring/ shift dogs etc....all seems in order, but I damaged one of the springs for the syncro dogs upon reassembley so I'll order from Herm tomorrow. I may yet send the whole mess off to him as it seems a little "grittey" inside the case .
I mentioned in my build thread that my tranny mount, and one motor mount were damaged badly, probably what caused the problem to begin with.
More after I talk to Herm tomorrow....Jim S.

I posted in my build thread pics of the OD dis assembled....everything seems in great shape except the shift dogs/springs. I'm convinced that this whole problem ultimately boiled down to bad tranny/motor mounts as many of you alluded to earlier. Thanks for all your help guys

finally got the Jeep running right and decided to try the OD.....still wouldnt shift into OD. Took it off tonight and found this
    [IMG]
whats left of the retainer clip and a chewed up "special washer"
proceeded to disassemble the OD and found the brass gear closest to the bearing distorted to the point that the shift ring wouldn't slide over it (thus no OD)....also the big bearing was missing 3 ball bearings :(....guess I'll need to drop the TC pan and fish them out
As bad as all this seems I'm relieved to know what the problem is, and after a call to Herm tomorrow I'll get the parts to fix this mess

They are fairly bullet proof units but it boils down to a couple of simple pieces,

    that fail.

    How's that Lincoln doin'?
