Hi I'm about as new here as new can be. I discovered this website last night and have been doing some looking around. Looks like a really good bunch here.
I have a 70CJ with a 225 that I have had for about 25years. It has been in storage and only driven alittle bit every year or two, lately(if that makes any sense).
Anyway I'm replacing the intake gaskets because of a leak on the front of the block. After I got the valve covers off I see the left side hasn't been oiling very much. I did some searching here and it is a little confusing but it looks like I can pull the rocker shafts and blow some air throught the oil hole in the head under the front shaft support?
Then just torque the assemblies back down. Did I miss anything?
Oh and there is a oil slield or splash plate on the rear of the rocker assemby(covering the rear four rocker arms that is low on oil) and not on the other. Anyway if anyone has anything to add I'd appreciate it. SP

instead of blowing air into the oil galley, I think I would rather spin the oil pump with a good drill and watch how much oil comes out left and right side. I assume it has decent oil pressure, problem may also be in the rockershaft assembly.

Just remove the rocker bolts evenly so not to bend anything. You wont loose any adjustments because there aren't any. You do need to confirm that you are getting sufficient oil up thru the block. As said by Bucket above, you need to spin oil pump and see how much oil is coming up. What was your oil press last time you started it? That shield is probably the one that covers the hole where the breather tube goes.

Thanks for that Guys, The oil pressure has never been exceptional, but seems like it would idle hot @ 20psi. or maybe a little under. I always thought that was adequate.
I did as you guys suggested and pulled the drier side rockers off and gave it a spin. I have lots of oil flow. I pulled the end rockers off the shafts and things look normal as far as wear and there is no scoring. Maybe that shield just keeps the oil down and off the cover and I am worrying over nothing? Thanks again SP

When I overhauled my 225, the driver's side rocker shaft was a clogged with sludge. I soaked it in the parts cleaner, then blew air thru it. That sludge was some nasty stuff. More like clay. I think some damage had already been done, though, as there is some play in some of the push rods and some loud ticking from those rods.

Like others have said, spin the oil pump first, then tear in accordingly.

Flat47, I am glad you mentioned that. I didn't check to see if the shaft had any restriction. I just pulled the end rockers off and looked at things.. My valve covers aren't back on so I may take a closer look.
One thing I noticed that made me wonder is that oil didn't come out of either side till I pulled the assemblies off the head. I thouhgt that I should see some oil coming out of the slots on the rockers.
