You can replace the pipe you have going from the headers to where it goes under the frame with some small mufflers. I know I got a cheap set at VIP auto parts for the 3a I had, they worked well.

I had cherry bombs on my 3b when I first built it with exhaust straight out the back, Looks really cool that way but I'd get a headache after driving it around and the exhaust fumes really killed me. I then re-worked it with some Turbo tube mufflers, They look just like glass packs but are way quieter and still flow really well. I then turned my exhaust ends out so they exited out the side of the jeep at the rear corners not straight out the back. It now has a really pleasing rumble, and when you get on it it sounds great but not to loud. Also the exhaust doesn't suck back threw the cab with a soft top on anymore. I also ditched my headers after leaking and noise problems and really saw hardly any diff. in power. and like it much better. Got rid of some of the heat as well.

alright well finishing it on sunday didn't really happen. turned out there was alot more that needed to get done. and now as the paint dries it still probably won't get done tonight either.

but either way heres some pictures

lateral view showing my ground clearance loss w. the new exhaust...still higher than that parking brake, and closer to the rear tires too.

Rear view, the back of the x pipe looks crooked because it kinda is. but that will still see a couple cuts before the tail pipes go in.

side pipes finish welded, lightly grinded, and painted

i can't say those things are especially pretty, but i won't have to look at them either. they won't leak and thats what counts.

i'm about to step outside and see if that pain has cured at all in the 35 degree weather....doubtful. but next is to finish securing the side pipes and see if i bought enough to make the tailpipes too. hopefully tie up all the loose ends tomorrow.

just engine enamel, i might throw some engine enamel clear coat too just to see what happens. my friend used this paint on his 2a's intake manifold and it didn't peel off sitting right next to his exhaust. but i don't have real high hopes for the longevity.

alright buttoned up the last items on this mini project today. everything went together surprisingly well, but...i'm must agree with everyone on this thread who said it would be louder than it was before. turns out those cherry bombs dissapated a decent amount of sound even though they were basicly straight pipes off the headers.

the only plus is this enormous amount of sound is 4ft behind me rather than right next to me. so it is technically quiter...not really. so you guys were right, but this x pipe sounds really nasty and i can deal with the sound haha.

some pictures of the finial progress...

my super pro tips...cause i ran out of money to buy real ones.

all the rear x pipe marked and ready to be assembled
    [IMG]

assembled and mocked up, then tacked in place. next it gets removed, finish welded and painted.

here's the most critical spot, looks like that diff will miss the x pipe by the skin on its teeth when fully compressed
    [IMG]

    welding compete and getting painted
    [IMG]

brackets and clamps got painted too, hoping to avoid rust
    [IMG]

finial product...junk pictures since i got finished after dark.

so i made one of those awful youtube videos where people videotape their exhaust and rev the motor like a toolbag. but this new setup does sound good, and you can have a laugh at it's failure to start on the first try.

I gotta admit, I don't think I've ever seen someone weld up an entire exhaust system without actually bending pipe.;)

haha yeah i think what i've learned is that 3 days (20 some hours) i put into this would have been greatly lessened by the use of a tube bender. plus it would be less ugly.

You must not have vehical inspection in your state. I would never be able to run that in NH. I would still put a set of cheap short mufflers behind the headers. Keeps you somewhat legal in your travels.

we have inspection in va, and emissions testing is slowly becoming legendary around here for being a pain and costly. but this jeep is registered under the vintage or antique status so there's no inspection to pass. just need to buy a town sticker.

You are lucky. In NH my jeep is reg as an antique and needs to have an inspection every 2 years. It must have what it came out of the factory with.

well i'm sure that's the rule on antiques here too, but they let me plate it with a different motor. and if the police really wanted to i'm sure it could be ticketed.

are they that strict up there that they wouldn't ticket you for modified exhaust or something?

If you took it to the wrong station you will not get a sticker. They are not to strict on the engine but it must have a working muffler and exhaust.

I welded up mine with no bending...not as much as this project, but when you gotta have an exhaust system, you gotta have an exhaust system.

I ran 2 into 1 with a cherry bomb on my Dauntless-powered 2A. It does sound good. Not too loud, and no exhaust fumes to smell. I ran my exhaust out the driver's back corner, right by the spring hanger and I've never had fumes come back in on me.

If it works for you, that's what's important in my book. You'll find out if it doesn't work. That's what it's all about: learning.

    Cheers!

I think it will be louder than the cherry bombs. I think the name is borla, they make compact mufflers.

Cool video. Sounds like she's got a 283 in 'er. Might be a little loud for my taste but i guess I'm starting to show my age. Nice work.
