Well, I have been reading everyone's posts here for a few months and I must say that I have learned a 'boat load.' I purchased my dream car (1971 C101 - bone stock with a 225 V6 and 3 speed manual) in the middle of this past summer and I have enjoyed spending time with my kids tinkering with it.

I am planning on restoring the Commando as close to original, while making it comfortable for road trips. The only things I want to change for my taste is the sound system (or lack there of) and I want to add just enough lift to fit 31" tires and cure my dragging rear...

Will a shackle lift get me that, or should I just save up for new springs to be made?
Does anyone have photos of additional speakers in their rig?
Last question - I love the original chrome bumpers but mine are cracked and tweaked - any suggestions?

    1. I would save up for replacement springs... I have spring overs, and it's hard to keep mine on the road.
    2. I have marine grade speakers mounted behind the seats, they work pretty well. Thinking about adding speakers up front somewhere also though. Looked for a photo, but.....http://s244.photobucket.com/albums/gg29/grouperboy/commando/?start=100
    3. I would rechrome what you have if you are trying to stay close to original

    Welcome to the site!:v6:

    Thank you for your insight.

I priced out to rechrome and -ouch- my eyes almost rolled into the back of my head. CT is hammering chromers and powder coat guys with Enviromental regulations and fees and such.:JEEP:

I forgot to ask... how do have your speakers mounted? In a box?

Welcome to the board...I'm just a tad farther north than you...also picked up a Jeepster a few weeks ago...they are great for the kids. I have a 4" SUA HellCreek lift on it with 31's and there is plenty of room, but due to the added width of the tire they do rub on the front springs while turning, rims with a different backspace or bolt-on spacers will be a necesity if you want to achieve full lock.

Can you post a pic of your rig - I was wondering how it would look with a 4" lift?

Great looking rig! I like the headlight visors - it gives it a 'mellow' look. That is the Hell Creek 4" suspension lift and nothing else (i.e. lift shackles, body lift, fender trimming)?

PO drilled out the area directly behind the seats and installed 6 x 9 marine speakers. I am out of town this weekend, will post pics of my rig next week.

Here's a couple of pics of the Gulf of Mexico today:):coffee:

    Thanks.

    Mines a bit different.

If you look close you'll see the back wheel wells are sportn YJ flares in second pic.

The front lift is 4 inch BDS rideglide Yj springs spring under and 1 inch shackles.
I corrected the caster by welding new spring perchs on the newly built d30 WT track, with new locks right, I built and put in at the same time.
I cut off all the front spring hangers and put in new beefy YJ ones.

I also had a local trailer fab shop make some reverse ubolts and a i made some plates for them and my front ubolts point up now like a spring over would be.
    ie. no bolts hanging down.
And Iwelded in F250 shock towers with F350 size rancho 9000xl's
Plus new braided longer brake hoses.
All new disc brake parts also.
this also relocated the front axle forward about an inch.

    View attachment 24327

In the back I have multi leaf stock springs.
Spring over conversion with longer custom spring perchs.
    the axle is a newer d44 from a CJD44 30spline with a trac lock.
New additions will be a traction bar and a eaton locker.
11 inch drums with 2 emergency brake lines for cutting corners ect.

In the long run Hellcreeks would be easier.

Dont forget our Jeepsters have the wierd offset pin location on the leaf spring this makes everything abit harder to convert.
just buying springs that fit is logical if you dont want to be fabbing...

Awesome! Thank you guys for your info and great pics. I think I am going to go back to my original plan with having new springs made w/ 2" of lift. If I need a little more I can always go with shackles.

There is a leaf spring company in Bridgeport, CT for you Connecticut guys. They won't ship, but they can custom make anything you want for any vehicle (I just used them for golf cart leafsprings for work). Half the price of Alcan springs! The folks at Hell Creek said they had a 2" suspension lift in the works for a C101 but it has been put on hold because of the 'state of our economy' or so I am told.

Lately it seems that way...though after my latest travels south of the USA I wouldn't trade it for anything.

    TrickPatrick,
Concerning your springs, I just new springs made for my Jeepster at a Semi-Tractor trailer repair business. I had them add 2" of arch to the springs. If I remember right a pair of springs cost me about $150.

I will include some picture of my jeepster which shows the sound system. I actually wasn't taking pictures of the sound system, so you will have to use your imagination a little. My sound system is all Sony. I have a Sony head unit, 6 1/2" rounds in the front kick panels, 6 1/2" with 1" tweeters in the rear kick panels, and a sub box with (2) 12" aluminum subs behind the rear seat. It has a 600 watt amp under the rear seat. I had to raise the rear seat 2" to allow the amp some breathing room. Raising the rear seat acutally helped the rear passenger comfort. Here are the pictures:

I am in Ct and I have a 70 Commando with 2 inch Alcan on 30 inch BFG's. I installed 2 four inch speakers in where the original speaker was. Can't even see them. I also have 6 inch speakers mounted behind the seats. Although with the back of the seats up against the speakers you don't get a lot of sound out of them. Add in the wind noise from having no top and the front sepakers are doing most of the work.

Couldn't figure out how to load an image but let me know if you want me to email you some. You can stop by as well..I am in Killingworth
