:? I'm starting to wonder about very bad rings, or maybe busted rings on maybe one piston? Heads don't look really sludged up, but I too was wondering about the gasket sealing surfaces on the heads.

I see the wire harness laying there, but I don't see a problem with the valve cover itself; what is wrong with it?

Tone: check for vacuum coming out of base of carb; check PCV valve for proper operation as mentioned.
if the engine is not breathing properly, or you have mechanical problems, rings etc, then the pressure inside the engine builds up and blows up like a balloon and this pressure, if the PCV can't handle the amount, will then blow out the path of least resistance, hence the valve covers.
If PCV checks okay, reseal valve covers, start engine, and remove oil fill cap. Excessive pressure will blow out cap opening like a smokestack; this is not good
stuck or broken piston rings, worn cylinder bore, etc

Did you check the port on the back of the carb to see if it was clear, and like Harry said check your breather on the other valve cover and see if it is ok, if not replace it or soak the old one in brake cleaner or something to dissolve the old deposits and sludge. Hippo I think what you are seeing is the wiring harness, the way it is painted motor color and laying, it does sort of look like the valve cover is damaged on the side but I think this is just the photo and your monitor playing tricks on your eyes.

I also noticed you have HEI and still have wires running to your old coil and it is still mounted, as cluttered as these motors are on the front I would have removed that right from the get go!

back of the carb is good, i pulled the hose when it was running and it shut off about 4seconds after i pulled it, the elbow on the pcv i shook it and it does rattle, oil gauge says 20 but it could be outta calabration... and that wire has some valve cover paint on it... i will be buying a new carb from hippo after he gets it put together, and im just wondering if theres anything else i can try that doesnt involve rocket science to do?????

    -thanks to everyone whos helping!!!

Tone: To do a compression check, just go to the nearest auto parts place and get a cheap compression tester. Taint a high price piece of equipment and easy to do. :)

Sorry, you don't need a part #. Just tell them at the counter what you want. If you can get a helper just get the cheap one that you hold against the spark plug hole while a helper turns the engine over with the starter. Unplug the coil wire so it won't start.

Jim you're right--I was looking at that bunch of wire. Thought that was the cover.
