I am trying to decide which way to go on my '75 build. Now I realize the windshields changed after 1975 but what I would like to know is if I put a '76 WF on my '75, would the '76 hinges bolt into the existing holes in my '75 tub? Also, if I go with a '75 WF, will any of the wiper motor/linkage work from a '76 or is that all different too?

All is not answered in the tech section. Obviously you didn't understand my question. I'm well aware that I can put a '76 windshield frame on a 1975 tub and it's the same width and it will work and all that. What I was wondering specifically was if the lower windshield hinges from a '76 have the same bolt pattern as the lower from a '75. If I had a new tub I wouldn't even ask as it wouldn't matter, I'd just drill holes where they needed to be (obviously the uppers are different altogether). My question is that since holes are already drilled in the tub, are the windshield and hinges still interchangeable? Also I was wondering about the wiper motor and linkage. I didn't see either of these specific issues addressed in the tech section and was hoping to get a quick simple answer from someone who actually had firsthand experience they were willing to share rather than being told to search harder. If you have the answers, share them. If you don't, why even bother posting?

I guess the problem is - we all know the windshield swap can be done, but none of us have done it... at least no one that has responded to the thread. We've seen quite a few early Jeeps with the later windshields, and the windshield will fit. I presume the newer hinges bolt on. The latches must be changed, since the early latch and wiper motor can't occupy the same space.

Wiper and motor questions have been covered in previous posts. A search would have found this info. IIRC Boyink used a later motor in his intermediate windshield with minor mods. The motor is basically the same, but the bracket is a little different. The linkage will not interchange without changing the lengths of the rods, which requires welding.

I'll be able to answer that in a day or two. I've been looking for a top for my '56 and so far have only found a serviceable one off a '77 CJ5. I may not be able to get the w/s frame off that Jeep, but have a buddy who will give me one off a later Jeep. When I get it, I will post up the fitment of the hinges and the frame itself. I too have been looking for this answer.I see by comparing pics of original lower hinges the pattern looks to be identical to the later style, but I'll know for sure in a few days.

I have a late model windshield on my early CJ and it was a bolt up, but it was to a fiberglass body, AJs.

Just put a '77 w/s frame on my '56 this weekend. The hinges will bolt to the original holes EXCEPT the lower one on the outside of the tub. The 77 hinges have an ear to mount the door on, this moves the hole forward on the hinge itself, not able to line up with the tub hole. Original hinges have the two holes in a vertical line. You'll also find the wiper motor wiring harness exits the motor and feeds thru a hole under the wiper motor. This hole is not present on the early tubs. You either have to route down thru defroster duct, make a hole in your cowl, or feed it down and then under your dash. HTH
