Hit a bunch of potholes yesterday and one of the friggin' clips came off of the dist. cap and the cap shifted thus busting the rotor. That's the second time that's happened in 6 months, and I gotta believe that there's a better way to secure those dang clips/cap than to duct-tape the clips to the cap. Anyone got any bright ideas before I toss the Prestolite into the garbage??
(no HEI or pertronix jokes please).

    Toss the Prestocrap.
Go with HEI, or Delco with Pertronix.
    No Joke.

    ;) :D

Good idea Steve, zip ties in some combination will probably work.

Gotta Delco with cap and rotor you can have for cost of shipping. One of the leftover's I cleaned out of KaiserJeeps garage. It seems to be in good shape. Might want to put a fresh cap and rotor and maybe points in it but for free, what the heck? Just PM me with your shipping info and I'll get a cost as soon as I can. Will be out of town this weekend though. Nickmil.

Ha ha lynn you're prolly right. Time to capitulate. Where to get pertronix? Nickmil--thanks for the offer! I have 2 other engines w/ Delco, so I'll prolly just swap 'em out. It's a straight-up swap, right?

Yup, straight swap. Delco is a much better distributor as parts are much more available. Nickmil.

To contact Pertronix customer service, call (800)-827-3758 (during the week, they're in San Dimas, CA) and ask them for a list of Pertronix dealers in your area. I have called them a few times and they've been very helpful.

The part # for an Ignitor for a Dauntless V6 is 1165, by the way, and I paid about $90 for mine. More info at:

    http://www.pertronix.com

I agree that the Delco distributor is the way to go, for reliability and parts availability, too. :)

    Hippo,
If your engine runs really bad and backfires a lot after you install the pertronix, turn the magnet ring 180 deg from what the instructions call for. When I put mine on about 2 years ago, they must have manufactured them wrong. Almost tossed it in the trash until someone on the board figured the problem out. Hope they got the problem fixed, but just in case they haven't keep it in mind. Once that was figured out, it really ran great.

    Hippo,

Good luck on the Pertronix upgrade. I agree with Goochie to a degree in that the upgrade isn't exactly a five-minute job (as it is with a VW 1600). However, after having read pages and pages of HEI install info. and reading posts about the modifications and time necessary for installing an HEI dist., I decided to go the easier route.

For safety's sake (especially when I'm out in the tules), I started carrying in my Commando: a set of points, condenser, negative wire for the coil, a set of feeler gauges and the right size Allen wrench, just in case the Ignitor decides to go south. Beats being stranded...

Congratulations, too, on taking care of the other problem

    Thanks guys.

I did swap out the Presto-crap dist in favor of the Delco, and I runs better. I might just leave well-enough alone and see how things go.
