I. Hate. Brakes.

    Front brakes were squealing on SSD...so thought I'd just flip on new shoes this weekend.

    Old ones had quite a bit of meat yet -but figured they had developed a glaze or something (had some issues with brakes locking up a couple of years back).

    Got the new shoes on without too much trouble - other than the replacement shoes didn't have one of the holes for the little pins that hold them in place. Marked them from the old shoes and drilled them in - seemed to work OK.

    Once all back together though I had little pedal. Figured they'd just need a bleed.

    Bled them this afternoon - when done the pedal was a bit better, but then on the next street over the pedal went to the floor. Looked underneath and sure enough -- fluid ****ing down the right front tire.

    So - assuming now either I didn't get them installed correctly or just have wheel cylinders gone bad now.

    These are 11" brakes that I bought all new - so they are several years old but mileage-wise pretty low.

    I've never been 100% sure I got them on correctly so will pull everything down and take some pics for review.

    Don't know what it is....over the years brake jobs have just been the most frustrating for me.

    OK - here's what I have.

    Passenger side blew the wheel cylinder. When I pulled the drum off, the adjuster arm, bracket and lower spring fell out. The adjuster arm was all the way closed - even though we had it spread out a bit while installing.

    On the driver's side, the bottom spring fell out, but the adjuster arm was spread out more and didn't fall out.

    Questions:

    - Are these things even installed right? These are the axles from Dutch and have had the brakes on here for ~ 7 years or so.

    - The shoes I took off had no "short shoe" -- both pads were roughly the same size. The replacement pads had one where the metal part of the shoe was a match but the shoe itself was ~ 1.5" shorter. I mounted these towards the front on both sides.

    Anything else come to mind or shown by the photos?

    hmm
    I see one too many hold down pins on each shoe
    the shoes can't move/pivot with two pins holding them
    IMO

    Odd - I just tried to put them back the way they were, but it was the top hold-down pin hole that I had to drill.

    eliminate the top pin on each shoe

    As with others, in all my years of seeing drum brakes..even as a kid...they all had only one holddown pin per shoe...as stated above you have no pivot point. I would also say that is the reason you blew a wheel cylinder...it tried to push an unmoveable shoe.....also could be why brakes have been getting the best of you recently.

    Eh...I have a hard time believing all of my brake issues are due to the double pins. Certainly the squealing wasn't which is what put me down this path..

    They've worked fine for literally years..including my CO and UT trip where the Jeep saw it's toughest wheeling. The other issues cropped up when I swapped the axles onto this Jeep - which hooked them to a different master cylinder (which I replaced a while back).

    And...I'm assuming the rears are setup this way as well. I haven't opened them up because they still seem to be working fine, but all the brakes came from 4WPH.

    Even with the low mileage, 7 years is 7 years. In my humble opinion, a vehicle which sits with very little use is a lot more prone to problems than one driven a lot- especially when it comes to brakes.

    I hate to be the voice of dissension but disc brakes are really simple and reliable- pretty cheap to do the swap on an ECJ, too. I'll never have another vehicle with front drums again...

    I also agree with hold down pins. keep the one closest to middle of shoe

    Actually I have a complete D30 with discs in parts - save for a R&P. Someday...

    Says the guy parting out his project...R)R)

    Here's my situation. I have probably another 6-8 weeks of driving it till the snow flies and I pull it down for the fuel injection install.

    I can figure the drum brakes out now and drive it during the last few days of summer and on warm MI fall days. Or I can start a disc brake project (on an axle I don't plan on keeping) and it won't see the road again until spring.

    What would you do? :)

    What is the brand/grade/part number of the shoes? What are the exact drum measurements? How is the finish on the inside of the drum where the shoes ride? The same questions apply to the rears...

    :? The rears aren't squealing and are working fine - I'm not about to tear into them now.

    The shoes came with the 11" kits that I bought complete from 4WPH -- so I have no idea of their part number brand or grade. Not sure what measurements you are after - I haven't the means to measure them with any degree of precision.
